8"It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public."
a)

The author contends that political leaders conceal information from the public is of desire. I concede that in few respects, this rule is of quite importance. In most respects, however, this rule is absolutely wrong, which is approved by many cases along the history.

Admittedly, withholding some information is so pivotal that any political leader that expresses little concern for it will inevitably be bogged down on a state of chaos, commotion and unsteadiness. Firstly, the national confidential secrets are related to the security of the nation, which is totally the key to the security of our public. What’s more, it is unwise to report every aspect in life of a politician, some of the information would efface the charisma of the political leader. This viewpoint can be best illustrated by an example concerning the sex scandal of Italian prime minister, He has made no secret of his love of women but the sex scandal surrounding Silvio Berlusconi is now threatening to topple him, as more claims emerge of the systematic recruitment of young women paid to attend private parties at his homes in Rome and Sardinia.

However, people have the right to know the truth for the information which has a strong relevant to the public. In 2009, Influenza A (H1N1) is pandemic virus typically found in Asia and Europe. On June 11, 2009, the WHO declared an H1N1 pandemic, moving the alert level to phase 6, marking the first global pandemic since 1968. If the government falsely withheld the information of the virus from the public, many more people will fall severely ill or dying and the H1N1 will inevitably result in increasing speed of contagion. Moreover, providing the citizens with the opportunity to learn most of the information they need and concern may contribute to the management of the government towards the entire society. Not only will it promote the liaison between the government and the people, but also go a long way to establishing a democratic society. The Annual Repot of Government in Chinese government helps to establish a respect and advocate. And hearings help government to draw out a reasonable legislation and policy.

Nevertheless, the political leader over-concealing of information results in gap between the government and the people, which may ruin the basic principles of democracy. Withholding the information at their will means somewhat autocracy, which will provide the chance of corruption. Chen shui-bian, a Taiwanese politician and former President of Taiwan China, he and his wife were charged with embezzling 104 million New Taiwan dollars (3.15 million U.S. dollars) in public funds and accepting bribes of about 9 million U.S. dollars in a land purchase deal. His corruption is due to his withholding information from the public, which is detrimental to the whole society. And the reason for the occurrence of corruption is lack overseeing, which can be easily found in the polity like monarchy countries in the past.

To sum up, it was the best of times when some confidential information is kept by the leader; it was the worst of times when political leader withhold some information from the public, which makes the country into autocracy.

题目:ARGUMENT14 - The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.

"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

In this argument the author concludes that the consumers begin to exhibit much interest in growing their own vegetables. To support his statement, the author cites a national survey conducted last month; the favor of buying related gardening magazines. At the end, he suggests to expand the scale to increase profits.

First of all, a threshold problem is involving the survey. Only can the national survey conducted the dissatisfaction on quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets, but it can not indicate the consumers will manifest interest in growing their own vegetables. It is very possible that they prefer go to some villages to buy the fresh vegetables supplied by the local farmer; it is also likely that they will continue to buy vegetables from supermarkets after the fresh vegetables come again as the supermarkets will do some change about the concern on the survey. The survey is their kind of complain to the not fresh vegetables.

Moreover, it is highly doubtful that the strategy extrapolated from the national survey is equally applicable to the consumers’ interests on growing their own vegetables since the author may ignore the unique features of that town, rendering the argument less reliable. What may distinguish the town from most of other cities of the nation is that the people of the town used to growing their own fresh vegetables for a long time, which make them boring, as they may prefer buying some vegetables from supermarkets; while the condition of the nation is that not many citizens have ever grown their own vegetables before, so they will curious about planting their own vegetables. If the regional features mentioned above are accurate, this argument will be considerably weakened.

Besides, it is considerably irrational for the author to attribute the interests on growing vegetables solely to the gardening magazines sold out, while he fails to take into account other factors leading to the same result. Perhaps, only magazine in the Village News sell well, because the owner there is kind-hearted; perhaps, people living around the Village News are the farmers and farmers need some advice as it is the time to seed; perhaps the gardening magazine Great Gardens is not on growing vegetables but on planting flowers, and fortunately the local people interests on planting flowers. In addition, it is highly doubtful whether the strategy proposed by the author can prompt the profits. However, the strategy of greatly expanding is unlikely to boost the sales of that company since there is the possibility that people are apathetic about growing their own vegetables, they won't buy the seeds.

To reiterate, the argument of the author is not convincing as it stands, and it is imprudent for the author to claim that people are favor of growing their own vegetables.

LZ的作文写的不错,从词汇到句式都很值得借鉴,特别是两个例子用的紧跟时事
不过吹毛求疵的提点小意见
长句的使用会使文章增色不少,不过最好是有适当的断句....
