Does withholding information from the public necessary and desirable for political leaders? In some cases, it really helps to effectively protect the people of the nation, but it should not be taken as a must for every corner of the public issues.

In time of many emergent cases, proper withholding information can help the political leaders to have enough time to handle the problems at hand and come up with effective measures to control the situation, preventing people from unnecessary panic from an early time. Withholding information from the public can also make the action of the government more effective. Taking the raid of criminals for example, if the police have discovered where they live and will take action at dusk, if they had informed all the people living in this region their plan, they action may be in failure if the criminals pay attention to the unusual behavior of people living there.

However, as we are all living in a democratic society, in most of the daily situations, people have the basic right to know the truth, and the political leaders have the obligation to do so. Although withholding information can sometimes reduce the complaints and conflicts of people, it may make us feel that the society is very harmonious as it seems, but it is not the right way to properly treat the problems that really happened. Continuous withholding information might make the people have less belief in the authority and raise the potential problems threatening the safety of a nation. On the contrary, although revealing the truth might cause some public criticism or complaints about the law and the measures taken by the authority, it is a good way for people to voice their thoughts about the nation. By joint efforts and effective supervision, these problems can be solved quickly. Only in this way can we make a really harmonious civilian society whose rulers are not the minority ones in power but all its people.

  
In addition, when discussing this issue, an important factor we can not ignore is that unlike people fifty years ago, we are living in a time of information, we can get messages from so many sources, especially from the Internet. Thus makes many political behaviors under the observation of all public. Also, in the face of incidents, people may believe in any versions they hear and see, if the political leaders do not tell them what the truth is, it might increase their panic instead of decreasing.


To sum up, everyone has the right to know the truth about what is happening in his nation, ruling out the emergency situations that must be kept secret in a group of people, the political leaders have the obligation to timely inform what is going in the nation.
