History, a study of past, is a narrative description of events happened in the past. The statement suggests that studying history, especially irrelevant to our daily lives, is worthless in contemporary lives. However, my opinion of history study is that it is valuable no matter whether it is directly conducive to our today’s lives.

It is undisputable that a study of history concerning about today directly has merits of our daily lives. Many troubles and challenges faced with our society today were also experienced in similar situation in the past. Moreover, main social ills have troubled us in every history times, such as family violence, rich-poor gap, race discrimination, juvenile delinquency, nature disaster, and the like. When we confront with a thorny problem in our society, people, at first, refer to the effective measures of related ones. Studying history should provide us with a reasoned way to solve current issues, or bring out a direction of addressing present problems. Taking a legislation of morality as an example, it reveals that it is a waste of time to force humans upon mores choices in the past. In modern society, we should adopt a more instructive and enlighten approach as justice under laws, equal human rights, fairness and freedom. By learning lessons and experiences from outcomes and results, our society can benefit in dealing with social lasting problems. History study, in this case, plays an important role in our daily lives.

In addition, the value of history study lies not only on social level, but on individual level. Learning about stories of history and achievements of great person serves to inspirit and encourage us in our daily lives. Reading stories of great individuals in the past and historical event, we know that every success fallowed with huge efforts. The great men and women who weathered adversity in real history and overcome many obstacles to final accomplishment can provide us with courage to face with difficulties and complexities. For instance, by knowing about the making experiments of Edison and the drawing eggs of Da Vinci, he or she gains persistence from their attitudes towards failure. Every successful individual renders lessons in courage, diligence, and perseverance as to lead us to recently achieve a similar success. History, to the extent, has its value related our contemporary to provoke individual inspirations.

However, the essence of history study is a way in that human should identify themselves, gauging changes in different periods of human beings. Persons have curiosities about an evolvement of human and a development of society in order to better understand ourselves. As a famous historian said (and I paraphrase): “Nothing will be significant than history for self-identity.” It is human instincts that trace back to the origins of culture and the genesis of human beings, to find out how human beings have evolved from generation to generation, how societies have changed from periods to periods, and how cultures have developed from past to now. Through studying history in recorded different periods, we learn out that various times of diverse culture has resulted in different value; human nature in history has remained constantly; a society has developed with the improvement of science and technology, and so on. As a result, study history, in our daily lives, is a chain of the past and present, which makes us jump out of limitations of contemporary lives in order to better comprehend a meaning of humanity, and better know how we should do today that it is more beneficial as an individual and a society.

In a short, the value of studying history seems ostensible that it is only meaningful in relevant our daily lives. It guides us to deal effectively with social issue, what is more, making us better know ourselves, and have an insight of the nature of matter that we may confront in our contemporary lives.
