Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
Key word: larger, individual, unusual, idiosyncratic
My opinion: partially against
Outline:
科学研究必须与社会需求相符合,但不能过分束缚科学家的思维,因为
1. 正:Individual interests works as a paramount impetus to do the research. (Thomas Edison: 1093 patents)
2. 反: The indulgence of scholar’s wild predilection will ultimately lead to several iniquitous and moral crises.
Clone and Genetic Technology 对人类伦理准则的挑战
Imperial Japanese Army biochemical weapon,
weapons of mass destruction 对人性的践踏
3. 反: It is the origin purpose for researchers to conduct the researches to the service of people and facilitate their contemporary life. 大学教育机构和企业合并,交大昂立,使人们快速收益。
4. 合: Pressing social problem/benefit society in the long run.
It’s risky and even unpractical to impose an official criterion in evaluate researches in terms of the social development since most of the discoveries are born by accidents or emerge as the byproducts of other researches.

Seated cozily in the plane thousands meters above the land with the cell phone on chatting with friends on the other side of the globe, no one will cast doubt on the benefits from the scientific research. However, the question comes how the research goes? Do the researchers perform the research with the social benefit in mind? Or do they just do the research to satiate their eager of personal satisfaction? To come up with a acceptable answer, we have to scrutinize the nature of research and correlation between scientific research and social development.
Scientific research, by nature, is the individual work, upon which, breakthrough are achieved to facilitate the live of human beings. Thus, Individual interests works as a paramount impetus to do the research. We should know, in the process of tedious and laborious research, only the interest may prop the researchers up in face of the obstacle.
To illustrate, Edison, the most prolific inventor in history, held 1093 patents in his name, as well as a great number of patents in England, Australia. His incredible productivity stems from his hobby of inventing. More than 2000 times of failure never frustrated him and prevent him from endeavoring until he found the tungsten as the most enduring and affordable material as the filament. Without the interest on his own part, Edison could hardly stick to his research.
However, we cannot rely too much on researchers' taste since the indulgence of scholar's wild predilection will ultimately leads to an iniquitous and moral crisis. Debate on the proper use of Clone and Genetic Technology began from their birth and goes on until now.
The abuse of Cloning means disaster. It is startling to come across from a sea of people a guy who looks alike you while with no bloody relations. All these may turn to reality if we give full rein to genetic researchers’ lust, without the necessary regulation of morality and humanity. No need to mention the excruciating man-made disaster of biochemical warfare, in which case the researchers exhibit their talent in an undesirable and disgraceful way.
I should say that it is the original purpose for researchers to conduct the researches to the service of people and facilitate their contemporary life. Only through the application in the actually life does the achievement of research make sense. Nowadays, more and more educational institutions join hands with the company to offer the vigor and fresh blood to the research. By doing so, the company save the budget put aside for research work and meanwhile the institution are timely funded to further its research. In Shanghai China, Jiaotong University, a key school noted for its research in science, links arms with Only, a local company in pharmaceutics, to garner enough fund to finance its research on one hand and put into practice its experimental fruits on the other. At the same time, Only also makes considerable profits through the cooperation. Such win-win situation best illustrates the benefits of mediating research to the social demands.
Advantageous as the combination appears, it is risky and even unpractical to impose an official criterion in evaluating researches in terms of the social development since most of the discoveries are born by accidents or emerge as the byproducts of other researches. Kepler's had vague concept of his achievement beforehand until he discover three laws of planetary motion. Mrs. Curry’s discovery of radium, to some extent, is the byproduct of other researches ascribed to serendipity. Therefore, the strict standard in research work is surely counterproductive in undermining the researchers’ initiative and consequently reduces their chance to make breakthrough.
All in all, the researcher should strike a balance between the social demand and individual interest. In the meantime, government should take proper measures to back the research in the form of monitoring and consulting.
