55 "Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education.
In out time the would is filled with well-established competition. Even when
pupils are at elementary school, they are require to pursue high grades. Competion is the fator that stimulate people to be more efficient and productive, and it help to active people's potential and ambition to get a higher goals. However, too much emphasis on high grades will lead to an over-competitive environment all over the school, which will in turn deteriorate the quality of education.
The learning driven by pursuing high grades will presents a relative fair standard to judge a students. And it indicate clearly which subject and what kinds of facets students should learn. By the intensive study and riview students will grasp the knowledge as firmly as possible. It seems high grades contribute a lot to our education, however, it has a quite chunk of flaws which affect students seriously. First, the aspects that high grades indicate students to learn are imcomplete--it exclude a varitety of knowledge that may be helpful to students, which will bring about an imbalance to the construction of students' knowledge.(?)Secondly, the grade is a random number that is fluctuatin due to its variance. To judge a students only by grades will be also relative unfair.
As for the teachers, grads-oriented education will result in such a disconcerting situation that teachers will place grades as the first priority. If the high grades are the only criterion judging students, the duty of a teacher will just be bound to help students to get high grades. In this case the quality of education will be impaired(diminished), and the potential and interest of students will be dampened(restrained). Graduated from Such kind of education, a student will not be a person with competence, even worse, a person who is imcompetent.
Futhermore, if high grades are used as the only standard--not only a criterion on judging students, but also the fator relevant to students' graduation, further education, employment and even adult life; students will be directed to pursue high grade for just the need of economy, which will exacerbate the unhealthy tendency--to study for jobs, rather than privy interest. It is possible that a student is interested in biology, but to choose a arts course will get a higher grades, he or she will be tempted to choose a arts course not by interest. Study withotut interest will impair a student's willing to learn and creation, which will do really harms to a student.
In sum, the pursue of high grades is used as a frame of competition to actuate students' ambition to learn. But it still have many work to do so that this frame will be improveed to perform better. Or the high grades will generate problems such as unfair scores, low-quality education, grades-oriented study and the like. We should improve the standard of judging a stuents by revising the grades with not just final examination, but also the daily assignments which will deduce the veriance of the random grades. And other measures should be taken, to make sure that students will get a high quality education. |
