ISSUE157 - "There is no such thing as purely objective observation. All observation is subjective; it is always guided by the observer's expectations or desires."
Observation is commonly regarded as the foundation of making choices. Based on their observation in the short or long run, people usually make judgements, choose preferences, and draw conclusions. Then an agitating question comes up: is there such thing as purely objective observation? Obviously this is not a straight-forward question. We all agree that observation made by the human beings is undoubtedly influenced by the observer's cultures, or expectations, desires and etc. In other words, it is rare for the human beings to make purely objective observation. But with improved technology, it is now possible to have purely objective observation.
First and foremost, when a person observes the world in the daily life, his/her cultures, expectations or desires will always influence its observing process or result. In this sense, there is no such thing as purely objective observation when one observing his/her daily life. It goes without saying that no man looks at the world with pristine eyes. The observer's cultures, expectations or desires are always mixed in his/her observation. These personal factors, as certain kinds of intangible substance, are invisible, but they take active roles in our every aspect of life in every minute, no matter you may feel it or not. This definitely includes the case that each time that a person makes observation, his/her cultures, expectations or desires autonomously influence the observing lens. For instance, when people observe a girl is smoking in the street, someone think it expresses the equality of man and woman, then their acknowledge to the behavior will guide them to look at the beautiful side of the girl. On the other hand, some people argue that it is unhealthy and inappropriate for a girl to smoke in the public area, hence their comments will direct their attention to the ugly side of the girl. As a result, no daily observation is purely objective.
Moreover, even in the scientific field, it is rare to have purely objective observation. It is true that, in the scientific research, researchers may strictly follow scientific methods to observe, which is used to guarantee the objectivity in the study. And the evidence shows that strictly scientific observation can approach the objectivity to the greatest degree. However, as we know, scientific methods are devised on the rational principle. They presume that the scientists who apply the methods are rational and free from the influences of cultures, expectations or desires. Nonetheless, scientists are just human beings, people like the ordinary ones. They have only limited rationality, and their observation is also influenced by the observer's personal factors such as cultures, expectations or desires. Their knowledge and experience just make their observation more objective than other's, not purely objective.
Nevertheless, with improved apparatus, it is now possible to have purely objective observation. Machines are not human beings. They have no cultural inheritance, no feelings, no expectations and desires. After we press the start-up button, they will objectively observe what we require and record it unbiasedly. Therefore, we can count on them to have purely objective observation. Take the stock market computer systems as an example. Everyday, hundreds of thousands of investors trade their stocks through the computer. And the computer systems in the stock markets automatically record every buying or selling in the market, and display all the results simultaneously to people. By the computer systems' objective observation and recording, the investors can make business decisions, or the policy makers can know whether the stock market is running stably. In a word, with updated technology, purely objective observation is possible at present.
To sum up, our cultures, expectations or desires function invisibly in our observation. As a result, there is no such things as purely objective human observation, no matter in our daily life or the scientific field. However, with improved apparatus and technology, it is of possibility to make purely objective observation at present. The human beings' wisdom and creativity, facilitated by the accuracy of advanced instruments, will surely make our world a better place to live in the future. |
