According to this statement, the speaker asserts that the lasting value comes from the artist not the critic. As to me, I strongly agree that even the critic is important to evaluate works, it is the artist who gives society something of lasting value.
Admittedly, the critic plays a vital role in helping the masses to understand the art work better by illuminating the works' background. For exmaple, the preface of a novel, which is always written by the critic, is necessary for readers to understand the time when the story happens, and the intention why the author writes such a story. Moreover, the critic is indispensable in choosing the relatively better works for the masses. That is their comments on a certain film, book or art piece provide more information and help us to overlook the worst ones. Take films industry for example. The number of films distributed every year is too large for audience to choose the best ones conrectly. Therefore, the critic evaluates these films by giving them different marks which facilitate us to choose the good films. In addition, by providing the right perspective, the critic leads us to appreciate the art work. Without their descriptions, we really cannot understand the true meaning presented by "Guernica", which is one of the most famous work of Picasso and is only a painting full of geometric symbols and animal images.
Deep down, the lasting value. rousing the mind sympathetic chord in the bottom of people's hearts, is undoubtedly brought by the art work itself. In this sense, it is the artist not the critic gives the lasting value to our society. They guide us to experience the beauty of the nature and the culture of our society. We enjoy the journey of beauty and immerse ourselves in the imaginary world. For instance, "Mona Lisa'' ---one of the most greatest work of Da vinci, tells the legends of secret beauty. On the other hand, the works of artist draw our attention to something rooted in society. There is no where more true than on the works of Mark Twain. His novel disclosed sarcastically the truth of the social phenomena. Moreover, we cannot negelect the fact that it is the painting namely "Guernica" itself but not the critic who provides a way to appreciate the painting that guides us to realize the cruelty of war.
What is more, the critic sometimes makes comments on the works unfairly even misleads the masses. The critic tends to evaluate the workd according to his or her own interest and behalf, thus may give bias to some work. For example, many criticism are imposed on the pop music such as hip-pop,R and B, rock and so on. The chief reason is that those critics prefer the classicial music. Furthermore,as the critic is more reasonable than the artist, and the art needs innovation, the critic's thoughts are more likely to be confined to the era they living. The more innovative the work is, the more difficult for the critic to realize it. After all, only through the test of time can the great art work manifest its true value. Van Gogh, whose paitings are popluar nowadays, had sold only one work in his transience of life. Therefore, the comments of the critic is not as trusful as many people regard.
Additionally, in some occasion, the critic may stand on the behalf of the politics. When Mark Twain used his pen as a weapon to reveal the social darkness, the critic, on the contrary, tried to maintain the government's interest by the means of degrading the value of his work. All in all, When faced with the various criticism, the artist should regard it seriously. However, the artist cannot follow the critic blindly. Without the independent thinking of the art, without the pursuit of the true meaning of the art, the artist will find he or she bogged down in the caterring for the critic or the masses. Then where do we find the other Mark Twain or Van Gogh who left something far beyond a novel or a painting, that is really the lasting value.
In sum, I concede the critic help us to understand the art works better. However, we should not lose the insight that only the artist could bring the lasting value to our society and the critic may sometimes own bias to the art works. Moreover, it is wrong for the artist to follow the critic blindly.

In this argument, the arguer recommends that the Mason City council will need to increase the budget to improve the publicly owned lands along the Mason River for the possible increase of recreational use of the river. To justify the conclusion, the arguer provides the evidence that MC's residents like water sports, but avoid the river because the there have been complaints about the quality of the water in the river. Moreover, the agency responsible for river has announced plans to clean up Mason River. However, careful analysis of this argument would reveal that it suffers from several critical flaws and therefore is unconvincing.
To begin with, the relationship between people's avoiding the river and the low quality of the water is unwarranted.Whether the river is suitable for water sports? I mean, perhaps the river is not wide enough for warter sports, for example boating. Perhaps the water of the river is not as deep as the requirement of water sports. If so, it is arbitrary for the author to attribute the pollution of the river to the rare use of it. Furthermore, the arguer assumes that the the rare use of the river appeared after the complains about the quality of the water. However, there is no evidence to support it. What is possible is that people always seldom use the river for unknown reason, but the complaints appeared just recently. It is obviously that the poor water quality is not reason for the rare use of the river, so even if the river become clean, people will still use it seldom.
What is more, even if the quality of the water is the reason, the arguer's conclusion suffers problems because it is established only on the plans of the agency. This fact is so insufficient to make the conclusion evaluable. The arguer fails to take into other factors which may prohibite the enforcement of the plans. For example, maybe the government does not have enough money to support the plans. Whether the project will be accomplished is a short time? How can the author guarantee that the plans would be enforced effectively. Without considering these and other possibilities, the arguer cannot demonstrate that the water of the river will become
clean enough to increase the recreational use of the river.
Additionally, the arguer regards that the Mason City council will need to increase its budget for improvements to the publicly owned lands along the Mason River. However, no evidence is shown to justify the assumption that the publicly owned lands along the river need to be improved. Perhaps land there is good to meet the requirement no matter the possible increase of the use of the river. Furthermore, whether the budge for the improvements has been concluded? If so, the increase of the budget is not necessary, even is a kind of waste. Laking such evidence to demonstrate the arguer's coclusion, this argument is open to doubt.
In summary, this argument has several patent fallacies which render it logically unacceptable as it stands. To stengthen the argument, the arguer would have to find out the true reason why the residents are reluctant to use the river. Moreover, the aguer should guarantee the enforcement and the efficiency of the plans. In addition, more evidence is needed to showned that the publicly owned lands require improvements and there is no budge existing for the improvements. |
