TOPIC: ISSUE121 - "At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species."

According to the speaker, the phenomenon that many species are currently in danger of going extinct are caused by the natural instead of human activities so the society have justifiable reason not to make extraordinary efforts to save the endangered species. I strongly disagree for the sake that human activities is the main factor leads to many species’ extinction.
Indeed, different kinds of species have appeared and disappeared throughout Earth's history. Some species go extinct due to the changes of the climate they live such as the extinction of dinosaurs and some go extinct for they cannot compete with other species for food. The Darwin's theory of evolution tells people that only the species suit for natural will live in the ecosystem. To balance the ecological, the natural itself will choose the suitable species to survive while others may become extinct. Scientists often call this process "eliminate through selection of contests". Thus, for those extinct naturally, it is unnecessary for human beings to make efforts to save.
Nevertheless, in contemporary society, the main causation to species' extinction is the human activities and thus, human society has the responsibility to save them. According to the recent research published by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the speed of species' extinction accelerate increasingly since the Industrial Revolution, which greatly accelerate the development of modern society and in the meanwhile, destroy the habitats of other species. A habitat, a place where a species normally lives, includes forests, deserts, wetlands and so on.As human society developing, most of habitats are destroyed through human activities. For example, in tropical rain forests, people cut down the trees to build farms, roads as well as cities. As a result, those live in tropical forests become endangered species. Thus, people have the responsibilities to save the endangered species for the sake that their habitats are now destroyed by human activities.
Furthermore, keeping the balance of ecosystem is important for human beings because human, no matter how intelligent, cannot avoid the fact that they are also a member of the ecosystem. Although some species' extinction seems to be none of our business, human themselves are higher level of the food chain, which means the broken part of the lower level will leads to unpredictable harms to human. For instance, certain boring insects (such as the mosquito, fly and so forth) are likely to have no benefit for us, and we must believe that we will live better if the mosquito all over the word disappeared. However, there will be a great number of antibodies that are poured into the human beings' body as a result from the mosquito biting us which increase our immunity from diseases. Then, spend a cost in money and a job to save endangered species is our responsibility.
In the final analysis, as human activities accelerate the extinction of many species, it is the human’s responsibility to save endangered species since human are also a member of the ecosystem and cannot survive without keeping the balance of it. |
