TOPIC: ISSUE94 - "Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated."
WORDS: 445 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2009-7-11 21:35:31
According to the speaker, every student should be required to take a variety of courses for the sake that the best way to become truly educated is acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines. As far as I am concerned, student should be suggested(advised?suggest后面跟doing?) to take courses outside their field rather than be required for the sake(in order) that they have right(rights) to choose which course to take.
In the first place, we have to admit that every academic discipline interact each other so taking other courses, which have some correlation with their major, will have active effect for a student's study. Through a broad basic education, students will have enough fundamental skills and knowledge for further learning(further learning什么?
Suppose a writer of science fiction without abundant knowledge on science, can he/she accomplish with his/her work just through the ability in literature.(可以再举个例子,一个科幻小说家的例子感觉有些力度不够,使得下面的结论有些苍白) So in order to succeed in a specific field, students should be compelled to learn many basic required courses(这句有些问题,因为required courses还是a variety of courses吗? 这点没有说清楚,导致这个结论显得有问题) to get a broad education.
Nevertheless, being truly educated are not simply equal to taking too much courses. In fact, to be truly educated, a student should have the ability of independent thinking, finding out problem solution and presenting suspicion.(这句说的好。) Although courses are resource to support student's thinking, but without independent thinking, creation will never be produced. Consider Thomas Alva Edison, a renowned American inventor, tested countless materials including carbon cotton, wood splints and various alloys for a suitable filament and finally invented the electric light. In his lifetime, he has only received three weeks of formal education. However, with the help of unceasingly independent thinking and endless researches to resolve problems, he gain great success. Undoubtedly, Edison shows what can be called as “truly educated”.(但是truly educated等价于great success吗?
Furthermore, since students' time is limited and they have their own interest and educational background, a student has the right to choose which course to take. As development of contemporary society, information increases in striking speed.(这句话说的有点无厘头,我觉得你的意思应该是:研究领域里有着很多很多不同方向的学科) For instance, in computer science area, there are many researching aspects such as computer graphic and multimedia, computing system, programming language and software, information system, artificial intelligence and so on. It’s impossible for one to take all these courses but to select the suitable one.(但是实际上这些课都是CS学生要修的课,你只可以说学习这些课的深度还不够大……) Only the student himself/herself knows what is truly requisite for his/her development in the future.(实际上,大部分学生在入门的时候并不知道他们应该学习什么,什么对他们今后的发展有用?) Thus, it may be advisable for students to choose which course to take rather than to be required.(这段所针对的应该是除了本专业之外的科目,学生选择的一定是自己感兴趣的,但是感兴趣的又为何一定是对自己专业对自己发展有帮助的呢?
In the final analysis, I strongly disagree the speaker’s point of view for the reason mentioned above. Although taking a variety of academic disciplines can broaden our vision, students have the right to make their decision on which course to take because everyone has different educational background.(我觉得作者只是说在本专业以外让学生学习各种各样的课程,但也有可能只是一些基础性的课程,入门性的,数量可能不多,只是覆盖的面比较广而已,根据前文,也不应该是strongly disagree)
