The arguer asserts that education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. It is true that without interests and needs, education is not that effective as people expected. However, when taken into action, education specifically designed will face many obstacles.
To begin with, there is no denying that students will learn as much as he can only when they themselves want to learn. If one is interested in some area or have the need for knowledge, he will totally focus on what he want and find any way he can to get the information he need. Even if the way is full of obstacles, their desire will insist them to reach the goals. For example, Edison invented the electric light without any education or help from others, because he was too poor to go to school as other children when he was a kid. It's the desire to learn that kept him seize his belief and struggle in the difficulties to teach him, and then lead him to success. The desire for knowledge hail from his need and interest, instead of anyone's order.
And, the education under this circumstance is the most effective and benefit for not only students but also the whole society. Firstly, for a single person, effective education could bring as much knowledge and even the way to get more knowledge which could be used during the whole life. Secondly, for the whole society, effective education could, on the one hand, give the society advanced technology and science and as a consequence promote the quality of public life; on the other hand, it could improve morality of people and make the society more civilized.
However, if the education is specifically designed for every individual, how much time and money should be spend on it? There is no government or nation could afford for such huge amount of costs until now and in a long time in the future. As so many immediate problems, such as poverty and war in some areas in the world, job-losing in even metropolitans, are still exist and need to be solved as soon as possible, costs on education must be limited.
Even if we have the ability to design education for every student, I think, to some degree, it's no need to do so, and perhaps it's not fit for young students. As we all know, the basic knowledge is necessary for students without which no further education could be continued. What's more, young students do not really know what they need in the whole life. As a result, when students are young and still learning basic knowledge, it's no need to educate them specifically. Even for college student, education that is specifically designed only for their interests and needs is still an illusion, for the reason that students should not just have a narrow ken which they are interested in. College education is to cultivate students who can not only have a broad eye for their own life but also help the development of the whole society. Without related information, students' major may be largely influenced.
In the final analysis, to have more effective education, one should strike a proper balance in learning not only what is needed and interested but also the basic knowledge and related information. |
