37. Woven baskets

The author of this paragraph argues that since archaeologists discovered such a “Palean” basket in Lithos, and it does not seem possible for Paleans to cross the Brim River and get to Lithos, the only explanation of the discovered basket was that the so-called Palean baskets were not unique to Palea. It is in fact a not so well reasoned conclusion because several of its evidences were doubtful and have to be clarified before they can be used to deny the uniqueness of Palean baskets.

To begin with, the Brim River and the lack of boats do not necessarily lead to the conclusion that the basket was not unique to Palea. First of all, although the Brim River is deep and broad, there might be times every year that the river was dry or frozen and people could simply walk across the riverbed and got to the other side. Also, we imagine a Palean woman who carried a basket was working at the riverside, and she then forgot to take the basket with her back. That basket might have been floated away and reached the other side of the river. One single appearance of a “Palean” basket in Lithos does not mean this kind of baskets with a particular distinctive pattern was also wove in Lithos.

Secondly, the age of the recently discovered basket was not clear, thus we do not know whether that basket got to Lithos at the time when there was no way for Paleans to get to Lithos or later. Even though archeologists now have advanced ways to estimate the age of antiques, it is still hard for them to provide very specific time. It is possible that the basket was taken to Lithos after boats were invented.

Last but not least, even if the woods around Palea were full of nuts, berries, and small game, it does not mean that Paleans would not cross the river for other reasons. Let along the fact that they might want food other than what they had in the woods, they might need plants to build their places to stay or to cure diseases. In other words, abundant food supplies in the Palea’s woods do not exclude the possibility of Paleans’ crossing the river, and thus cannot be used to say that the basket was not brought ober to the Lithos by ancient Paleans.

To sum up, this argument lacks of complete reasoning for it ignores the possible change of the river and the chance that the discovered basket floated across the river by itself. In addition, whether the basket got to Lithos before the boat was invented. Moreover, the food that Paleans had in the woods was far vague than a persuasive evidence.
