Whether all nations should help support the development of a global university to solve the world's most persistent social problems, as the speaker asserts? As for me, it is necessary for all nations to establish a global university to resolve many social problems. But there are still some problems that a global university cannot resolve.
TO begin with, a global university is able to attract many experts in different backgrounds, or talents from various countries. Consequently, their diver knowledge, perspectives could converge and ignite a sparkle of wisdom which of course benefit our human beings. There is nowhere more true than on the issue of education. As the levels of social and culture development vary from one country to another, education in different countries lays emphasis on different aspects which to some extent are determined by their governments. For example, American students excel in initiation and innovation in study, and Chinese students are famous for their well-ground knowledge and logical ability. No matter which country's policy is better or worse, there is no denying that all of them suffer problems. In this sense, A global university is needed, which aims at the true effective education including intelligence, personality, innovation and so on.
What is more, in this era of wide communication around the world, there appear more and more problems which call for the cooperation in different countries. For example, while we have understood we come from a germ cell, the magic of life is far more complex than we suppose. Therefore, a global university undoubtedly plays an important role in such scientific researches. Moreover, other problems---environmental pollution, hungry, reservation, the reservation of historic relics have expanded to the extent of the whole world. For resolving these problems needs global cooperation, a global university promises the high effeciency in solving these problems, and guarantees no waste of resource. After all, a global university could be compared to a global village where resources could be shared and communication is much more frequent than that in different countries.
However, we cannot overlook the fact that global university is only an acdemic institution which cannot solve all the social problems.Take political issues for example. When a government launches a war for its own interest such as petrol, coal, silicon, wealth or something else, how can we expect the global university to resolve it? Because it is greed in human nature rather than other objective factors leading to the war. While the talents in the global university is so smart that they seem to be able to solve all the acdemic problems, they never come up a methord to eliminate the greed rooting in the bottom of those politician's heart.
Additionally, when it comes to a same problem, there may be different opinions. That is some countries lay emphasis on it, on the country, aother ones perhaps do not care about it. As the result, the clash appears. For example, when faced with the problem of population, China and India may focus on reducing population, whereas Canada may support to increase the population. Whose opinions should the global university follow? All in all, the globle university should respect both aspects, carefully weigh both aspects, seek the similarity between them to find the best way of solving the problem.
In summary, a global university is important in mordern world for the reason that it contains many talents and could resolve problems more efficient. However, not all the problems could be resolved by a global university. In addition, the global university may face some clashes between different countries and should balance the interest of these countries to come to a best choice.
TOPIC: ARGUMENT162 - A recent study shows that people living on the continent of North America suffer 9 times more chronic fatigue and 31 times more chronic depression than do people living on the continent of Asia. Interestingly, Asians, on average, eat 20 grams of soy per day, whereas North Americans eat virtually none. It turns out that soy contains phytochemicals called isoflavones, which have been found to possess disease-preventing properties. Thus, North Americans should consider eating soy on a regular basis as a way of preventing fatigue and depression.

In this argument, the arguer recommends that North Americans should eat soy on a regular basis to prevent fatigue and depression. To justigy the conclusion, a study is shown that North America suffer chronic fatigue and depression more than Asians. Furthermore, Asians eat more soy per day which contains isoflavones, and isolavones have been found to possess disease-preventing properties. However, careful analysis reveal that the argument suffers some logical flaws and is unconvincing.
To begin with, Laking more specific information about the study it is impossible for the arguer to assess that North America are more likely to suffer chronic fatigue and depression than Asians. For example, How many people are included in the study? Maybe the number of people studied is too small to make the result invalidate. Moreover, whether the study was confined in a small region? I mean, the study may only concentrate on the people living in one place and overlook that of the other places on the continent of North America. So it is arbitrary for the author to conclude that the people on average tend to suffer more chronic fatigue and depression than Asians.
What is more, the fact that Asians eat 20 grams of soy per day is insufficient to demonstrate that soy could contribute to preventing fatigue and depression. The arguer fails to take into account another factors which could be attributed to fatigue and depression. For example, perhaps the people of North America are more busy in their work, and maybe the pressure layed on their normal life is much greater than that on Asians. Or the style of living is helpful to prevent fatigue and depression. If so, the arguer cannot domonstrate that it is soy to prevent fatigue and depression.
Furthermore, whether isoflavones is also contained in other food? No evidence is offered to evaluate the conclusion that soy is the only food that would contribute to the less fatigue and depression. Maybe North American's food also contain isoflavones. Without eliminating these or other possible factors, the conclusion is unwarranted.
Addtionally, the arguer draws a false analogy between Asians and North Americans. Even if it is soy to help Asians suffer less fatigue and depression, there is no evidence to support the recommendation that Northe American should eat soy on a regular basis as a way of preventing fatigue and depression. It is quite possible that soy is useful for Asians but is helpless for North Americans. After all, there are many difference between the two kinds of people.
In sum, the argument has several patent fallacies which render it logically unacceptable as it stands. To strengthen the argument, the arguer would have to provide more details about the survey to show that North American suffer more chronic fatigue and depression. Additionally, more evidence is needed to substantiate the conclusion that it is soy to help prevent fatigue and depression, and the soy is also useful for North American. |
