In such an era that science and technology rapidly developing, knowledge in textbooks may be not catch up to the real situation in society. That's what the speaker asserts,it is necessary for college faculty to get involved outside academia, spend some time working in their professional areas outside universities. Yet,strictly followed, the speaker's recommendation would sound convincing,particularly in engineering fields, as discussed below. But on the other hand,the author also need to aware that, for some specific areas, like humanities and arts, the assertion is probably unwarranted and require more consideration.

When it comes to academia, the first thing coming up to our mind is the education in universities,the instruction of professors and so forth. Besides that, one of the most important factors that call us to take into account is the requirement of the society. In such a developing world, if we wish to keep in pace with the change around our working area as soon as we graduate from college, only the knowledge in textbooks is insufficient, we also need the information in the society.Taking the engineering field as an example, some of the courses we take in class is often outdated for the technology is evolving every day. With the help of outside experiences faculty bring about, we will have a fresh sight to what we learn, what we think and what we believe. Hence, I agree what the author states that faculty should be send to work outside academic world to assist them offer a better courses.

In addition, inmost areas, not only the up-to-date instruction can we achieve within out side experience, but we can also gain the ability in the connection of theory and practice which is especially important to a student's development. University is only the preparation of our career, just the words in textbooks cannot let us notice what happens outside. Once we step out the college, what we faced is all practical problems which ask us to utilize the knowledge we learned in the class to solve it. That's the value of outside experience we get in touch within the college.

However, does that activity so necessary that demand all faculty from any area to get involved and spend time on this? Absolutely not. For the areas that ask independent thinking and unique creativity, which is especially true in humanities and arts, are dispensable or even redundant. What work outside academia can a professor of literature do? Does that a waste of time and money? As to arts, it emphasizes the understanding of the world by people's own eyes, without any other's influence and has the characteristic of uniqueness. What can the work outside academia do either? Therefore, in certain areas, we should consider the problem in cautious.

To sum up, for some areas which need the contact with society, the work outside the academic world, alike the speaker expresses, benefits the students in college very much.But for some certain fields, like humanities and arts, that will get the half result with twice the effort.
