There are numerous great artists whose names have been carved on the mural of art history with their eternal works. By contrast, critics, who seem to have nothing to do with the creation of the art works, are often neglected when people enjoy those works. In effect, critics, who rediscover those buried works and translate the value to the public, often play as important a role as artists in the realization of the value of the art works. Moreover, the criticism can exert large influence on the art, and even has a profound impact on the whole society, which is as lasting as the art itself.
Art has a profound and permanent value. Almost everyone, whether rich or poor, beautiful or ugly, educated or illiterate, has more or less heard of those names such as Beethoven, Van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway, or has been somehow stuck by the beauty of the art. Art represents spirit, virtue, beauty and so on, which, together with the art itself, are immortal. Many of the works of art produced hundreds or even thousands of years ago still have an immense impact on our society, whether Mona Lisa produced in 16th century or Homeric Hymns in ancient Greece. The value of the art will never decay with the time.
However, even if a piece of work is extremely valuable, it is not always very easy for the public to realize the value. Fortunately, the critics often play a vital role to guide the audience to appreciate the arts. As we know, many artists stay in the darkness. They appear to be eccentric and mad, and obviously, their works were unrecognized. Thanks to the critics, who dug out the buried works, and introduce them to the public and translate their values. Take William Blake, who is now considered as the most spiritual writer of his time, but when he died, there was even not enough money for his funeral. It is the critic called ETA Hoffman that rediscover his excellent poetry, leading his name to be memorized. Therefore, without the critics, we may imagine, many of the great works may have disappeared.
Furthermore, the criticism itself can become lasting value of society. Albeit we can not directly see any paper works set up by the critics, we are definitely influenced by the critics’ thoughts. We always need to look back to our predecessors, which have already become the model criterion of the society, to guide our ways. The models, like Nietzsche, who has already jumped out of the area of criticizing arts, make his impacts to different aspects on the society. In effect, their theory has been exerted to improve the development of the philosophy. And their rare thoughts have become the perfect masterpieces.
In conclusion, there is no doubt that art is priceless treasure of human beings. But it is unwise to neglect the value of criticism, which is often helps the value of art works to be recognized and influences various aspects of society. |
