Topic: to truly understand your own culture- no matter how you define it – requires personal knowledge of at least one other culture, one that is distinctly different from your own.
Culture as a historical and social phenomenon is a long-term accumulation, including art, languages, customs, political beliefs and so forth. Is it necessary to know a distinct culture in order to truly understand one’s own culture? In my opinion, one can get a more comprehensive understanding of his own culture by learning other cultures, however, it is not the unique and most important way to learn a culture. only one studies the origin and development of the culture can he get a profound cognition of the culture.
The speaker is on a rational side to contend that one should learn a different culture to understand his own culture. After all, comparative approach is universally applicable, only through comparison can one realize the difference and relative merits of each to get an incisive comprehension. One apt illustration involves the diversity of the food culture between China and the occidental countries. Chinese think a lot of “harmony between human and nature” while western countries advocate people oriented. From the point of Chinese cooking traditions, taste is the most important. So Chinese food cooking contains many processes. The selection of materials and the assortment of condiments are both demanding. since the food need to be heated for a long time, some nutrient would be boiled. In the contrast, western people pay more attention to nutrition. They focus on the balance of various foods which make them healthy and strong, yet, the styles and patterns are unitary compared to Chinese food. We might not realize the feature of our food until the comparison. Via the awareness of the difference we know the advantages of our culture and can absorb some elite of others’.
Admittedly, the study of a distinct culture is significant to the comprehension of one’s own culture. However, the most effective way to understand one’ culture is to find out its origin and the development process. Ignorance of the derivation and history would result in a discrete or unilateral understanding. To justify this claim one need to look no further than Chinese Dragon Culture whose image goes into every corner of the nation and influence spread to all levels of the society. To truly understand this culture, one need to know that the dragon drives from a mythology in which ancient people thought there must be a dominator of all the creatures and named him dragon. The dragon is a symbol of Chinese nation. There are many customs and festivals relevant to it, such as the Lantern Festival on which people would play a dragon lantern to celebrate. Foreigners who do not know the origin of the culture hardly understand why Chinese regard the dragon as a mascot and would be curious about the dragon on clothes. Even a native will fail to understand the meaning of it if he tries to comprehend it by learning another culture for the diversity and specific of culture. this example strongly supports the point that it is not crucial to learn another culture in the study of one’s own culture.
Furthermore, there are many other ways to learn one’s own culture, such as to learn the representative persons and celebrities of a certain period, to study the masterpiece in history and so on. In short, one knows his culture via various ways and to learn a distinct culture is not a must.
In the final analysis, one can penetrate his culture in many methods. Personal knowledge of a distinct culture is helpful to get an all-sided understanding but is not prerequisite. What is pivotal is to know the origin and the development.
