There is always a public controversy concerning the issue of whether the laws are just or unjust, and whether every individual in a society should obey just laws and disobey unjust laws. Different people have different views. According to me, the responsibility of our citizens is to obey the laws. If the law is really flawed, the proper method is to amend it by legal process.
To begin with, what kind of laws is just? People's view on this question may differ because of different identities, experiences, belief, and positions. As the original purpose of building up a law is to limit every individual's behavior in a order and lead the whole society to an ordinary way so that the well-being of the whole society could be guaranteed, "just" here may means that every one have their rights protected in a legal and moral way.
Every one has the responsibility to obey the law because only in this way, the whole society could stabilize and then have a better development. It is the law that brings a unified criterion to a judgment of what people should or should not do and what people deserve or not to own. If people all live a life in the categories of law, our society could works in order.
Sometimes individuals may want to disobey laws and pursue the so-called "deserved rights for themselves" because they think the law is unjust. However, in a democratic nation, the law is always just and the impulse of resist comes from the subjective views. If every one disobeys the law because they think it is unjust, the legal system will collapse and the whole society will come into chaos. For example, if a businessman want to run for his own rights without considering the rights of customers, he will sell forged and fake commodities which would bring huge profit for himself and significant lose for customers. If so, the customers could not have their rights protected. As a result, every individual should obey laws, whether he or she think it is just or unjust. Only in this way, all people's rights are protected and the well-being of the whole society could be guaranteed.
Even if the laws are really flawed, the responsibilities to amend it are belonged to legal executives and law draftsmen rather than our ordinary citizens. To amend a law, the executive staffs should first assure that the law is really unjust and then amend it in legal process. What's more, if a government wants to be supported, it must have just laws which could guarantee the stability of the society and well-being of its citizens. The Fascist government did not last long just because of its cruel and unjust laws.
In the final analysis, to have a stable society, the responsibilities of our ordinary citizens are to not only obey laws, but also not resist laws. If the laws of a government are really unjust, it must be amended in a legal way. |
