In the modern world, numerous approaches to information are available due to highly advanced information technologies. A broad network of media has been developed. Meanwhile, it is more difficult for the public to admire someone as a hero. However, hero never actually disappear because media is just one, sometimes not objective enough, of ways to evaluate a person.
To satisfy people's curiosity, media agencies have a great motivation of profit to pry into giants' and celebrities' privacies. The intensive media coverage exposes many details of the brilliants, some of which is ignominious since nobody is utterly good or bad. Then media work as a magnifier to overdraw these foibles, which leads the public to consider those brilliants as ordinary people. Gradually, fewer and fewer are accepted as heroes. Michael Jackson, the king of pop, still keeps a record of best sales for one of his albums. Before he was accused of obscenity, he was appreciated all over the world and once regarded as an epoch-making hero in pop music. But when the scandal was exposed to the public, though Michael was found innocent at last, since then Michael suffered more criticism than praise and was not as popular as before. He was diminished by media rather than the accusation.
Despite that sometimes media is misleading, intellectual comment is often presented by the public. There is no denying that heroes' feats cannot fade at all in spite of their flaws. Those great giants are honored for their achievements. As long as their contributions are acknowledged, their prestige can endure the excessive critical media. Philips, a swimming athlete, won seven gold medals for American team during Beijing Olympic Games. He was reported to be addicted to drugs and had been criticized for quite a long time. Even though, he is still regarded as an excellent American citizen by the public due to his unprecedented accomplishment.
Admittedly, media have some negative impacts on public attitude towards public figures, however, media play such an essential role in supervising these public figures. Nowadays those people concern more about their behaviors and strive to display a graceful image to the public. For instance, almost all celebrities are enthusiastic in public welfare.
In conclusion, though sometimes media expose and exaggerate the heroes' demerits which undermines their reputation, their feats cannot be eliminated. Meanwhile, advantages of media as a supervisor should be emphasized. Furthermore, it is strongly required that media should be more objective and authentic. And we public are supposed to keep sensible towards media.
