TOPIC: ARGUMENT162 - A recent study shows that people living on the continent of North America suffer 9 times more chronic fatigue and 31 times more chronic depression than do people living on the continent of Asia. Interestingly, Asians, on average, eat 20 grams of soy per day, whereas North Americans eat virtually none. It turns out that soy contains phytochemicals called isoflavones, which have been found to possess disease-preventing properties. Thus, North Americans should consider eating soy on a regular basis as a way of preventing fatigue and depression.

The argument is based on recent study that the people in North American suffer two kinds of diseases much serious than Asians, and an interesting fact that the Asians have more soy in their daily diet. And according to such evidence, the author take it granted that the soy contribute to the prevention of chronic depression and chronic fatigue, and suggests that the North Americans add soy in their daily diet in order to prevent those diseases. The argument may seem reasonable at first glance, but after a careful analysis, I find those flaws in author's argument as follows.

In the first place, the author relates the high rate of chronic fatigue and chronic depression in North America to the amount of soy people take per day for a reason "interestingly". It's obviously lack of firm evidence that those two things have a causal relationship. There are thousands of differences that the North Americans and the Asians have in their lives, and how can we ensure that it is the soy which lead to the diversity. Maybe the author will argue that there do exist a kind of chemical substance which is good for our health, yet under the underground that author shows no direct proof that this substance has a obvious treatment for those diseases, we still can't make such a hasty conclusion.

In the second place, suppose that the chemical substance really make contribute to the disease, but the arguer wrongly assumes that this kind of substance can only be obtained from soy. Actually, there are many other kinds of food containing it. We can't say that the Asians must take more than the Northern Americans.

Last but not least, we all know that there are some differences in the digest system we have. It's hard to say that the soy can be absorbed as well as the Asians do.

In conclusion, the author makes a lot of mistakes in his argument, and to make us believe what he suggests, he had better provide more convincing evidences, such as a direct proof that shows a causal relationship between soy and those diseases, and also eliminate the possibility that the soy can't be digest by the North Americans.

TOPIC: ISSUE203 - "The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines."
WORDS: 501          TIME: 00:50:00          DATE: 2009/7/17 21:28:39

Since the history is like a flowing river, millions of people have been washed away without remaining their names in the history, while there are some heroes and heroines having their names and stories remembered by the flowing time. No doubt that they are the model of the period they belong to, and in some sense that their characters represent the spirit of that time.

First of all, if a person is regard as a hero or heroine, there must be something that he or her achieved which caused a huge change of the whole society. For example, in the 17th and 18th century in Europe, several scientists became the most famous and highly valued group in nowadays. Such as Newton, who discovered the Law of motion and made great contribution to both physics and math. Galilee and Copernicus are also remembered by history, because they not only brought new atmosphere in science. but challenge the ruling of thearchy. Both of them were considered as the role model that that time, and if we review the character of that time, we will find that they share a same spirit which reflects the rebound of science during the Renaissance perfectly. The spirit is to feel freedom and be objective in the science study, and not bend to the thearchy.

Secondly, only a person who fits the spirit of that time, will be able to chosen as the hero of it. There were a lot of heroes, who did not achieve big successes, or even just did things we thought normal. According to a survey to other countries' citizens, the Chinese who they are familiar with most, are Mao Zedong and Lei Fong. Here I don't need to talk about Mao Zedong. It is a little surprising that Lei Fong was one of the most famous Chinese to all around the world. But if we considering about the time background, we will find that his spirit of being willing to help others suits the need of that time, especially in China, a country suffered from war for a hundred years and had just started to develop.

To cover my point of view more all-around, I have to point out that not all of the heroes could be a representative model of time beyond doubt. Since heroes do great things in every aspect, we can't judge a piece of time by only a individual. But it is truth that we will discover what the society values most based on what type of hero that period favors most.

To sum up, my point of view is that though only several persons do not have the profound power to present the society they belong to, yet there is something we can chase and realize from them. For that most of the heroes or heroines are so perfect that they seem having no flaws but actually impossible, we can experience the fact that every period of time needs some heroes to lead others' lives and presents it.
