Whether the arts such as painting , music, literature reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, as the speaker asserts? For me, I strongly agree with what the speaker says.
To begin with, as an olding saying goes: the arts source from the life. We have to admit that the art comes from people's daily life which is a large part of the sociey. There is no where more true than on the issue of Hip Pop music. It, as we all know, originate from the daily life of black as slavery. This kind of music is famous for the free rhythm and vulgar words in lyric. It goes without saying that its popularity in mordern society can be partly explained by the more danamic social environment as well as the more freedome to express the ourown opinions. In this sense, the arts of course exhibit people's social life.
What is more, the arts also manifest the social ideas to some extent. For example, in this era of rapid development of technology leading to the boom of economy, the explosion of population together with the development of industry is attributed to various social problems. environment problem to which Chinese people pay great attention, put the sand in the wheel of the sustainable development of society. The Beijing National Stadium, that is the bird nest, is designed to express the significant meanings of
Green Olympic and Technology Olympic. In addition, many teleplays displayed in China hint the change of people's attitudes to the policy of reform and openning-up through 30 years.
Deep down, the arts are higher than the life. Let us cast a look back at the period of Renaissance, many art works including poem, painting would be the focus. From <Divine Comedy> composed by Dante to Da Vinci's most famous painting <Mona Lisa>, we know more about the process of people's pursuit for human nature. As the history never comes back again, only through the art works can we follow the tracks of history to experience the clashes between the religious belief and the aspiration for human nature.
Moreover, the arts may grasp the impulses of a society and give impetus to the development of the human being. When we talk about the American Civil War, we cannot neglect the novel---<Uncle Tom's Cabin> which was composed by Ms Stowe. In this book, she described the slavery's piety life at that time and contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War. Even Lincoln had said:Ms Stowe wrote a novel and led to a great war. The artist is precisely such a group of people who look further than the masses. They convey the idea through their work, then the idea hold the masses together to accomplish a revolution.
In sum, it is undoubtedly the arts reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society
TOPIC: ARGUMENT176 - The following is a memorandum from the sales director to the president of the Healthy-and-Good food company.
"A recent study indicates that Venadial, a new margarine currently produced only in the country of Alta, actually reduces cholesterol levels. Derived from the resin of pine trees, Venadial works by activating a metabolic response that is not yet well understood. However, cholesterol levels fell ten to fifteen percent among participants in the study who consumed Venadial daily, and the risk of heart attack by one-third. In addition, the new margarine is so popular that stores in Alta are unable to keep it on their shelves. Therefore, if our company obtains the exclusive right to sell Venadial internationally, our profits are sure to increase substantially within a very short time."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that if Healthy-and-Good food company obtains the exclusive right to sell VEnadial internationally, its profits are sure to increase greatly in a extremely short time. The conclusion is based on a study that Venadial reduces cholesterol levels. Furthermore, the arguer provides the evidence that V is popular in Alta. However, careful analyses on this argument reveals that it suffers from some critical flaws and therefore is unconvincing.
To begin with, the arguer cites a study to demonstrate that V is helpful to reduce cholesterol levels. To evaluate the argument, we need to know how the study is conducted. For example, how many participants are included in the study? I mean, perhaps the number of the participants is too small to demonstrate its validity. Moreover, whether the study chose the participants randomly? However, the arguer fails to provide any evidence to substantiate that the study is scientific.
What is more, the fact that cholesterol levels fell ten to fifteen percent among participants in the study who consumed V daily is too insufficient to mean nothing. The arguer fails to take into account the other factors that may affect the cholesterol levels and lead the same result. For example, the participants began to take exercise at the same time. If so, it is entirely possible that it is exercise rather V contributes to the decrease of cholesterol levels. Or perhaps their eat less meat or eggs in this period. As we all know, less meat and eggs will lead to lower cholesterol levels. Without eliminating these or other possibilities, it is arbitrary for the author to conclude that V helps to reduce cholesterol levels.
Additionally, there are other factors contribute to
V's popularity in Alta. Maybe V was sold quickly for the reason of discount. Or people bought it only for its taste. If so, the arguer cannot bolster the conclusion. Even if V is popular there because it reduce cholesterol levels, it does not mean that it will also succeed internationally. What is possible is that people do not like its taste internationally. |
