13. Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of the countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct.

观点:某些语言的消失是历史发展的必然,它的存在只有供历史研究的价值,如果刻意保护既浪费资源也没有必要,因此政府只需把研究工作做好即可,不必过分保护。

As the development of times, many our ancestors’ inventions and creativities have been on the verge of extinct. Among them, there are many valuable heritages need to be preserved, such as the Pyramid and the Great Wall. Because these heritages are the results of the ancient people’s labor and their intelligence, they are important for the modern people to get knowledge of the history of our ancestors and eventually know ourselves better. So are the languages of people. There are more than one thousand of languages exist on the earth, among which, some are used by billions of people, like Chinese, English, French and so on, and some are only known by hundreds or even tens of people. What is worse is only fewer people are still able to speak them. These languages should not be ignored as one kind of human’s heritages.

Through the study of the languages, the anthropologist can elicit hypotheses which concern the circumstance and development of the ancient people who speak these languages, while the sociologist could gain the structure of the human society of these people. Hence, for the lesser-known languages which are going to extinct, we need to focus our mind on them to prevent them from becoming lost.

However, we should not forget the reason why language emerged, in another words, the mission of the language. All languages are used for exchange information between different people. So if human find another method better and easier than their language for them to communicate with each other, that language is no longer needed. This presumption has not happened until now because so far speaking is still the most convenient way for communication. But for two different languages, this displacement could take place – when a group of people find another kind of language is more effective to communicate than their one. After the European people arrived at American Continent, they take charge of North America rapidly. These settles begin to develop their own agriculture and commerce, hence, they need to protect their colony and expand their colony, so they seized American Indian people’s land. Losing their land, the American Indian people had to learn how to live peacefully with the settlers, thus, they learned their language – English or Spanish – to work for the white people. After the founded of the United States, the government began to consider the Indian people’s living condition and rights. Though the Indian people did not need to work for the white people, they still need to speak English because the majority of American people speak English. Does this phenomenon mean the English is much easier to pronounce and write than the North American Indian language, or the grammar of English is more concise than those of North American Indian language? No. It is only because English is convenient for American people to communicate no matter which ethnic group one person come from. We can see that the languages’ development is along with the historic progress. Thus, if one language become less known and is spoken by fewer and fewer people, it means people find another language which is more convenient and effect for communication.

For those languages which are going to extinct, the government should preserve them because they are great and valuable resources for us to research the history and philosophy of ancient people. But can we prevent them from becoming extinct? That will need a substantial money and manpower. What is more, this investment must last forever, or all the effort before will gone. So what the government should do is to record the languages which are becoming extinct. Through recording, these languages can live on the documents for ever, which is enough for research.
Hard work counts.
