As far as I am concerned, not all faculty should be work outside. Although working outside can bring benefits to teaching in school, excessive emphasis on outside working may have harmful effect on education.

Admittedly, working outside in professions relevant to professors' courses does have positive effect on teaching. In contemporary society, upgrading of knowledge exists in every moment. It is unpractical to expect that one can catch up with the development of his profession just through studying textbook. However, through outside working, professors can know the developmental direction of their professions and application of their knowledge so as to keep pace with the requirement of their professions' development.Besides, with the help of work experience accumulated in outside working, professors can better teach students understand the knowledge on textbooks and inspire students' interests. In the process of working, it is inevitable to face some problems beyond the range of theory. Professors can raise questions in class and discuss with his students. As a result, students will be inspired to think independently instead of just following the steps of textbooks.

Furthermore, the results of researches can be used in actual application by cooperating with companies and education will be benefit from this cooperation. On one hand, students can get valuable opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and broaden their vision. On the other hand, through transforming the results of researches into financial profits, we can expect more research funds to sponsor research and teaching in universities. Therefore, quality of instruction at the college and university level can be improved by cooperating with companies.

However, not all faculty should work outside in order to improve the quality of education. First, it takes a long time for professors to work outside. And professors may under great pressure to finish their work. As a result, teaching may be ignored since lacking vigor. Second, for those faculty who study theoretical professions such as mathematics and history, there is few work relevant to their courses. Thus, concentrating on researching may be a better choice for them. Third, working outside is not the only way to improve the quality of instruction. Attending academic conference or holding academic discussion activities can also push the instruction forward. Hence, other things can be expected to replace outside working and excessive emphasis on outside working may have harmful effect on the instruction.

In the final analysis, the speaker's viewpoint is too extreme. Not all faculty should work outside in order to improve the quality of the instruction. Although outside working do have great benefits, different professions have different needs on improving quality of the instruction. For those professions which concentrating on theory a lot, there are other ways better than working outside to improve the quality of instruction.
