Urging the scientists to make sure whether their research can benefit the society before they set out is kind of unreasonable. The researchers and scholars do have the right to follow their interest while doing researches.
First and foremost, what the scientists are pursuing is mostly to explore the unknown frontiers of the world, which means scientists themselves are not very sure what they can harvest or even what they will seed, so no mean what impact on the society their discoveries will have. Some scientific discoveries, especially in some basic science fields, their contributions are always indirectly. Considering some math scientists, as an example, they spend their whole life working on some theories, while obviously their equations have nothing to do of our citizens’ well-being. However, years later, when our technology needs to innovate; these equations are just what we are looking for. Before the results come out at last, even the public will be confused and make wrong decisions; how can we expect the researchers to make a sound decision at the very beginning.
Furthermore, human’s view is subjective, what seems useless or ridiculous at first place; maybe some seemingly foolish ideas will change the whole world in the future. When the Rhine brothers were testing their “plane”, the public just take them as geeks who want to be birds; when Galileo tried to convince the public that the sun isn’t the centre of universe, he was considered no more than a madman. Only years later, when experiencing the convenience of planes and hold a new view of the universe, we began to adore them ad heroes. No one can tell the future, so we should show more respect to our researchers and scholars’ passion and fresh ideas at the very beginning.
Besides, interesting is the best teacher. Exploring the unknown is a tough work, filled with frustrations and obstacles. Great interest and passion is the very motivation that supports them to overcome those difficulties. After failing hundreds of times, it is the great passion and interest in his work that support Edison keeping doing research until the birth of first electric bulb in human history. Without interest, it’s hard for him to repeat the experiment again and again, sparing no effort to struggle step by step to the goddess of success. A person will love his job and spare no effort to make it perfect if it matches his interests and personality, so do the researchers.
However, being a part of the society, all the researchers and scholars should have conscience and a sense of responsibility. They should concern the pressing issues, especially for some researchers in economic fields, and make their research related to them. And at least, they should make sure their researches will be no harmful to the public.
In sum, interest and passion are the preconditions of researches; just let the interest leads the way, as long as conscience is already taken into consideration.
