TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
WORDS: 825 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2009-7-21 20:24:18
In the past few years, many students were always learning or even reciting what the teachers said in the classes. That does not make any difference. As our society progress and our education system evolutes, the importance of independence of the students in the procedure of study looms large. The statement above speaks that students should bring a certain skepticism to their study rather than accept the knowledge passively. Here, I completely agree with the statement.
To begin with, the spirit of skepticism can bring about the ability of critical and independent thinking to the students. Critical thinking is a kind of approaches to thinking real life problems or academic issues all the round. It is publicly accepted that critical thinking is one of the qualities that most contributes to the ability of doing research in the academic world. If someone fails to consider problems from various respects, then the conclusion they draw or the research they do will probably be unconvincing to others. According to their disability to tell the truth and the relationships between facts and evidences, they may probably get a totally incorrect results. In fact, such thinking ability is necessary no matter whether they are doing academical research in a university, doing a project in a company, or doing some ordinary things in their daily life. Then, the spirit of skepticism can provide the chance to training their way of thinking and then bring up the strong ability of critical thinking. When such students meet problems or knowledge, they will think about many related problems, such as whether it is true, whether there exists any other solution to the original problem or whether the proof the teacher gives us makes any sense. By considering such questions, they actually exercise thinking problems from all kinds of aspects. That's the training of cognition. With this thinking ability, their study, work and life will become easier in the future.
Secondly, students who always question about what they have learnt can better understand and study their courses. With the spirit of skepticism, students can definitely find the points and problems that seems to not be understood by themselves. By talking about such problems with their schoolmates, friends and teachers, they will finally get the answers. This question-and-answer procedure may happen from time to time. However, while they are asking, talking and discussing, their understanding about the certain course will become deeper and more profound. It is definitely that their study on the courses can be easier and their results will be better than most of the other students who do not like to question their problems. For instance, one of my classmates is just the case. After taking the classes, he always have many problems, which are not trivial as we see. These problems can sometimes be much harder for us or even the teacher to explain or solve. And then we always find that his understanding of problems is deeper than us when we are discussing. Obviously, he is one of the top students in grade in our class.
Last but not least, skepticism can also develop the student's ability of innovation. As we know, innovation is, same as critical thinking, the most important quality that are stressed by our society. We always say, "We are living in a society with innovation." Truly, innovation is the impetus that pushes our society forward. Without innovation, we can only step back and forward in the place where we have already find out. While the future is never seen by us, we have to try hard to jump out of what we have arrived and keep running aroung, and then we will find the new area we never knew and even never imagined. That's the future. You may know Eddison, a famous inventor. He spend most of his life in invent new productions, such as lights. That's the innovation. We can imagine that without Eddison's invention, what our life will become today? Will we have our house bright even in the nighttime? Maybe or not. Therefore, the importance of innovation should never be overlooked. Then, the skepticism about problems actually lead the students to trainning their ability to innovate. In fact, finding out the missunderstanding points is also a procedure of innovation. Others can not find, but you can. That is to say, students who always ask problems are not foolish but are innovative. Like Einstein, when he was a child, he loved to ask all kinds of questions, and made his teachers unhappy since he asked too much. However, he worked out the principle of relativity in the final, which can not even be understood by others in the time.
In conclusion, skepticism can practice the ability of critical thinking, and the ability of innovation. Also can it improve the study of students. Therefore, when students are studying, the spirit of skepticism should be highly recommended rather than the way that merely accept the knowledge passively. |
