TOPIC: ARGUMENT13 - The following appeared in a memo from the chief executive of a video game company.
"We have recently been offered the opportunity to buy the rights to produce a video game based on the soon-to-be-published children's book "Squirrel Power," by Peter Wood. While the cost of the rights is substantial and will place economic constraints on our company in the short-term, there are two reasons that the purchase of these rights will undoubtedly be a wise investment. First, Wood's last three books have been best sellers and the movie based on his first book was highly profitable. Second, the popular characters and story line in "Squirrel Power" will save us time in developing our video game, thereby reducing our costs."

The argument states that the video game company should pursuit the rights of the "Squirrel Power" and it will undoubtedly help the company to be highly profitable. To support these assertions, the author cites the fact that Peter Wood’s, the creator of "Squirrel Power", last three books and the movie based on his first book all get succeed. Besides that, he also claims that by utilizing the story line in "Squirrel Power", the development time of their video game will obviously shortened, thereby reducing their costs. However, the argument relies on what might be a false analogy between games and movies and some of its assumptions is unwarranted, needs more evidence meanwhile.
First of all, the mere fact that the last three books’ achievement does not prove that the soon-to-be-published book of the series will be a best-seller too. After all, the book has not published yet, we, actually, know little about the feedback from its readers. Whether the book is a nice work is questionable right now, let alone the video game transplanted from it. Thus, the success of Wood's last three books lead us hardly to believe that the video game based on the forth book will obtain the praise of the public.
Secondly, the executive simply equates the movie's success with the game’s, which is groundless. For we all know, movies and games are two totally different media and their audience also vary a lot. People who are fond of films may not play a game at all. The movie's, adapted from his first book, amazing profits shouldn't come to a convincing reason for the company to acquire the rights that is substantial especially it will bring economic constraints to itself. That is really a hazard and worth more consideration.
Thirdly, the author fails to take into account other factors which are indispensable before a video game to be released to the public. Beyond all doubt, scenario is very important and it will decide the sales of the game. But we have no idea about if the forth book of "Squirrel Power" is not suitable for a game for, as an example, too straightforward of its story line. Additionally, during the development, people probably encounter big problem in sudden which will occupied them too much time to solve it. Hence, we need more evidence and details on the book and the development team to evaluate whether it will save time or not.
To sum up, in consideration of the expense of the rights and its effect to the company, I reckon the executive should consult more people for more details of the investment to determine the purchase. Only depend on the information above can’t persuade anyone to accept his idea. |
