TOPIC: ARGUMENT185 - The following appeared in a letter from the owner of the Sunnyside Towers apartment building to its manager.
"One month ago, all the showerheads on the first five floors of Sunnyside Towers were modified to restrict the water flow to approximately 1/3 of its original force. Although actual readings of water usage before and after the adjustment are not yet available, the change will obviously result in a considerable savings for Sunnyside Corporation, since the corporation must pay for water each month. Except for a few complaints about low water pressure, no problems with showers have been reported since the adjustment. Clearly, restricting water flow throughout all the 20 floors of Sunnyside Towers will increase our profits further."

According to the adjustment of lowering the water flow made on the first five floors’ showerrheads of the ST, and corresponding few comlaints about low water pressure, the author hastily gives the conclusion that if this adjustment is made to all the 20 floors of ST, then there will be clearly increase on ST’s profits further. Persuasive as it seems, the author virtually features some flaws onec submitted to further examination.
First of all, the aurthor asserts that after the adhustment , which restricts the water flow to approximately 1/3 of its original force, although the actual readings of water usage before and after the adjustment are not yet avaliable, since the corporation must pay for water each month, the author rashly comes to the conclusion that the change will obviously bring about a considerable savings for Sunnyside. However, this statement is free from reason that merely based on the assuption of the author’s subjective mind, which tend to be unconvincing. As only actual data can illustrate the effectiveness of this adjustment. Without the actual data, we cannot rule out the possibilities that the residents use the same amount or even much more water than before because the residents may think that the water flow is smaller than before thus lead to longer time of water flow. As a result, the adjustment to the first five floors of Sunnyside Towers is futile in saving water.
Secoondly, the author cites that there are little except complains about the low water pressure, so it is possible to apply the adjustment to all the 20 floors. As the former restrict was only applied to the first five floor residents, there are already comlaints about water pressure be proposed, then it is possible that the rest of the 20 floors will get much lower water pressure and even will confronted with the situation of lack water supply owing to their higher position. Thus the ajustment will fail to be available.
However, in order to saving water actually, the author should pomote residents' saving water awareness, or modify and refresh the old equipments of the water system frequently to assure the needless waste of water. These can be more effective methods..
Granted that all the flaws above is out of question, the author claims that this change will give rise to the increase of the company's profit further. However, common sense informs me that the water fee has not occupied so much of the overall of that. So that the saving of the water seems have little effect on the contrubition to the ST’s profits. As other respect like the lease fee of each room occupies a majority of the fee seems more important in promoting the profits, so it may more possible to promote profits by charging higher.
In sum ,to bolster the author’s statement, he/she should (1) get actual data to compare the amount of water usage that before and after the adjustment.(2)caculate the avalibal water pressure and analyse carefully the possible situation of the rest of the floors, (3)consider other possible aspects that dominates the majority part of the ST’ profits so that make the ultimate conclusion, so that the statement can be more convincing and effective in increasing the further profits. |
