Basing on the empirical evidence that we are trying to avoid a circumstance happened to absent the choice in our quotidian life, the speaker accordingly claims that the circumstance is very much rare. I agree insofar as the first half of the assertion, while it is worth considering with the modern society that whether the circumstance happens quite rarely.
To begin with, admittedly, I have to concede undoubtedly that we are trying to make choice by the minute. To witness people’s decision, one need look no further than the school, where students may have optional course for extracurricular study which depends on their personal interests, and where they could determine what occupation is more suitable for themselves in the future. Especially in the democratic modern society, freedom for choice could be an essential part of the human rights including the free speech and the liberation of thoughts.
However, it does not mean that we have no choice, when we are absent to make a choice at times. It is known as the common sense that the distinction between two kinds of choices which we called “bad choice” and “good choice” is determined by whether we regretted after selection. Consequently, in order to make a better choice, people in certain situation use to have a third kind of choice that is absence of choice. For instance, senators in the Congress who disagree with both the bill and the opposite opinion would abstain from voting. Keeping silent is also a kind of rights for expressing an attitude or opinion in a society with the democracy. Moreover, sometimes people have to be absent to make a choice inasmuch as the refrain by certain objective condition, and then were yielded to ignore other options. Doctors in the past, who would be glad to help but cannot, did not have a device allowing them to go inside human body to identify health problems or to operate delicate surgery. However, advances in computer and biophysics have started a microminiature revolution that’s allowing scientists to envision and in some cases actually build microscope machines. Therefore, doctors would give patients necessary treatment or operation to save more life with the most probable choice of ways.
On the other hand, there are indeed some cases that people are definitely not allowed to make decision which cannot be alerted by human’s mind and even wisdom. Death, inevitably, is the fact that everyone would go to it at one day without any opportunity to be survival whatever how hard effort had been done. The sun, naturally, rises in the east and goes down in the western sky because of the rotation of the earth. And leaves falls down when autumn comes. Thus, something called veritas, like belief, is independent of our will that we are not willing to change the other option to believe in.
In sum, in my observation, we are certainly trying to do effort for making a better choice over and over again in our life, while the circumstance, to be sure, is not rare that we are absent to have a choice. As it has been mentioned above, democracy let us have the rights to possess much more freedom including to abstain on our own initiative, people do have more choice to work better with the high-technology that has spawned significant changes in our life and work, and the truth never allows us to have a choice. |
