Should scholars and researchers pursuing their individual interests without being concerned about contributing to the larger society? As far as I am concerned, the answer may be no for the sake of a solution that individual interests can be combined with social contribution without conflict.
Admittedly, interest, which can be seen as original motive, plays an important role in research. Without interests, scholars and researchers cannot be supported to carry out unceasing as well as boring investigation. A recent science research published by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology shows that a person once being in some activity, the efficiency of such kind of activity raises. Thus, with science basis mentioned above, pursuing individual interests do promote people's work. Thomas Alva Edison, a renowned American inventer, the father of electric light, tested countless materials including carbon cotton, wood splints and various alloys for a suitable filament. It was not until nearly 1,600 tests were accomplished that Edison and his team discovered a carbonized bamboo filament that could last over 1,200 hours. That's exactly an excellent instance to explain how significant the interests are through offering motive.
Nevertheless, scholars and researchers, who are members of the larger society, are required to undertake social responsibility. It is the larger society that sustain their studies in political support together with financial patronize. Suppose you delegate all the taxpayers, will you sponsor a project just for someone's personal fondness instead of only a little bit of social contribution? Perhaps the majority of people will say no. Moreover, controversial researches such as human cloning, which may be harmful to the larger society, should not be carried out for no more than one's interest.
In fact, taking individual interests are not opposite to making social contribution. A practical solution is to combine individual interests with social requirement in an effective way. After all, for those scholars and researchers, pursuing interest is the motive to attain their final intention-serving the society, by their incessant efforts. For instance, to meet the needs of growing populations, researches concerning new sources of energy are expected to solve one of the most pressing puzzles-energy deficiency(替换shortage). It would seem from what we have said so far that the quest for energy is a positive force that results in new, sometimes revolutionary technologies that greatly improve the quality of human life. Consequently, those applying themselves to researching new sources of energy, which they are interesting in, can also contribute to the larger society without abnegating their interests.
In a word, the speaker's viewpoint is unilateral. Only to unify individual interest and social needs can scholars and researchers undertake social responsibility without abnegating their interests. |
