The statement above speaks that it is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value. However, I do not completely agree with it. In my point of view, due to the different contributions and the correlation of the artist and the critic, they both provide something of lasting value to our society.
To begin with, I have to concede that the artist actually can create great works of art, which is a kind of properties in society that can be lasting for long time. An art work can show the public a picture of beautiful scene, can lend the reviewers a kind of natural feelings, and can also build up a great figure to remind people of the history or the significant individual. To say it clearly, art is an independent style in the society and a most important property of the inner world of spirit. Since art is always presented with the formation of a photograph, a novel, a piece of song, a block of sculpture or even a movie, which is usually a kind of reality that can be stored for such long time, then art work can be the very style of property and value that can permanently make an influence in our society.
Secondly, the critic, though not engaged in create the real works, is also important in creating lasting value to society. In fact, what the critic contributes is the words they say about works of art, since these words can also accurately reveal the inner world of spirit in the critic's mind and indicate the critic's attitude to not only the art but also the society.
What's more, the critic's evaluation can better help the public to appreciate the works of art. Most of the public is not good at evaluate the art, thus the importance of a critics looms large. Without the critics, it will become even harder for people to find out what is truly concealed in the art works. On the on hand, people may miss some important imagination, thoughts and skills presented in art. On the other hand, reviewers may be not able to separate the normal and common works from the large quantity of arts. Taking an example of a singer in China, whose performance arouses much controversy in the critics and the public. As a singer, she can not sing her songs fluently and soundly. Perhaps, she challenges our thoughts about music. In most cases, she will be not accepted by us any more. But, at the same time, some critics say that her songs are written well and she can be regarded as a genius in creating music. The ideas of the critics immediately changed many people's attitudes and this singer actually goes well in a singing competition and maybe she will go far in her sequent singing career.
Last but not least, the critic is also the connection that associates the artist and the public. Art works need to be published and presented to the public. Thus, it is important to make the art well-informed. In this case, the critic makes contributions. With critics' different kind of evaluations, the art works can draw more attention of the public, which largely improves the social value of the art works. Conversely, without the critic, it may be hard for the artist to make their works well-known, in which case the artist's ability and talents could be unable to spread out. For example, Van Gough, a famous painter before, was ever not appreciated by anyone at the time he was painting art works. While, many years after he died and till now, his works are highly praised by our critics and hence they are in high price and significant value. Maybe in the ancient time, if some critics are concerning about his works, Van Gough would be going on an alternative career of his painting life.
To sum it up, considering the different responsibilities and the influences of the artist and the critic, both of them can give society some property with lasting value. Therefore, the artist and the critic should be equally respected in the realm of art. |
