What the issue suggests is that the study of history should place much on groups of people who are neglected for the most significant events and trends are made possible by them. However, it is also a vital role that the famous individuals play in. Meanwhile because their predominant devotions dramatically change the events and trends in history and individuals' actions can be more typical to study, I think the emphasis on individuals is exactly right.
Admittedly, the groups of people are the core of history. They are the historical creators and continuators. Lots of ordinary people unify together to build the basis of the history, although everyone of them plays a little parts of tremendous history pictures. Like the World War Two, can you claim it is only a match played between Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin and Hitler? Mass of common warriors devotes themselves in this terrible battle to fight against fascist and save more innocent people. Can't you believe it? Just to see the movie called "Saving Private Ryan", you will see the forgotten heroes' spirits and understand humanity can't survive till now if these people are not involved.
However, when reaching to the history study area, it should take more emphasis on the few elites, because they have further understanding of the contemporary social condition and possess the capability to lead the large scale action. The elites' decisions usually define the ultimate key to the results, which is the study of history mostly paying attention to, calling "Turing-point". Like the Long Match guided by Mao Zedong, it is his brilliant military talent that finally leads the Red Army survives, which is the historians mostly emphasis on. Without Mao's decision, the Chinese history must be rewritten. The Turing-point dramatically determines the future, which is not brought by groups of people, but by the elites because of their outstanding view. In spite of the individual's distinguishing characteristics, individuals also have the common natures same with the ordinary people. But when talking about the historical study, it is difficult to describe everyone's function in the events assuredly and exactly, so history features the light on the few ones to let the offspring remember the Turing-point.
Moreover, the most significant events and trends in history are made possible by both of the individuals and the groups. It is surely that the groups consist of the huge parts of the story, and the leader is always the few one. History is always influenced by so many opportunities combined with the accidental and inevitable factors. These factors discriminate the differences between the elites and the common ones. Common ones go after the inevitable trends, such as the real estate craze in present, which may decide to be ignored by history. While the few have the chance to catch the accidental factors, they will be the typical models imprinted by history if they catch the opportunity, or they are still the same with the ordinary people. It is said that, the hero chooses history. This illusion is created by the most people' thoughts for they only pay attention to the Turing-point but neglect the natural elements. Actually everyone decide history.
To sum up, the most significant events and trends in history are created probable by both of the famous few and the groups of people whose identities have been forgotten. But it should be noticed that it is meaningless to put much emphasis on common people in historical study. Meanwhile the elites share the same with ordinary people, and their thoughts and views decide them to be the key to the events and trends in history. |
