169.The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.

"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

Grounding on some studies conducted by Boston College showing professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same place, and assuming that the Pierce University should follow it by offering jobs to their spouses to attract the most gifted teachers, the author concludes that it is worthy to invest in this work for attracting new professors to Pierce University. However, there are still some intermediate steps that one should think about before jumping into the conclusion.

To begin with, the author commits a false analogy. He oversimplifies the conclusion. There is nothing different between the small towns which Bronston College and Pierce University locate in. It is highly possible that the town which Bronston College(BC) locates in has a higher standard of living level while the town which Pierce University(PU) stays in is far beyond any metropolis and has a low level to live happily. Or maybe BC has a better reputation in study area than PU which makes the talented teachers are more willing to work in BC. Lacking of such details, the studies in BC town can not be the basis to support the author’s conclusion.

Furthermore, even if BC town is much the same with the PU town, the author still fails to conclude that the professors are happy to live in a small town only because their spouses have jobs in the same geographic area. It is possible that what the studies reveals is just a coincidence that the new teachers are willing to work where their husbands/wives work in. The author fails to take other probable reasons that the new gifted teachers may consider into account. Like the working condition in University and salaries , without these information to be regarded. the author can not simply draw his/her conclusion.

Last but the least, it is presumptuous to claim that it is worthy to do this investment even if the professors are willing to work in PU when their spouses are employed in PU. First, no evaluation has been investigated to show this measure really can augment the numbers of new gifted teachers. Second, it is also possible that what the PU offers to the teachers' spouses is rejected by their spouses in high level. Because PU is merely a university which means it can not offer all the employments the staffs' partners want.
Third, it is still doubtable to be asked the university economical burden after the numbers of teachers and their spouses highly expand according to this method. Without this, the argument fails to reach its conclusion.

To sum up, judg
