121."At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species."

I agree with the speaker’s board assertion that since as a result of natural processes, lots of species have become extinct, without human at many times in the geological past, it is not fair to make expanse to humans in effort, time, and financial well-being, to save endangered species. However, sometimes we still have some responsibilities of helping those species dying out because in the development of industrialization some pollution and environmental disasters are made by human being.

To began with and basically, we can see the statements make sense that in old times those species would die out for failure to adapt to other changing conditions rather than human processes for the reason that there was no human being existing in the world at that time. As soon as the living condition changes, such as weather becoming too hot or too cold, habitats diminishing, hardly finding their food, species would all probably extinct, no matter how strong and powerful they used to be. Here’s a good example that can illustrate my point. During the late Jurassic Period and possibly the Early Cretaceous Period, lived a genus of sauropod dinosaur. Brachiosaurus, meaning “arm lizard” was one of the largest animals known to have walked the earth. Even though they were huge and powerful, they suddenly became extinct approximately 65 million years ago, with many other groups of dinosaurs. The nature of the events that caused this mass extinction has been extensively studied and accepted, such as the asteroid collision. It is said that the impact caused extinctions both directly (by the heat from the meteorite impact) and also indirectly (via a worldwide cooling brought about when matter ejected from the impact crater reflected thermal radiation from the sun). Also some paleontologists believe that failure to survive in changing conditions is the truth of extinction of dinosaurs. Whatever is really truth, those species died out about 65 million years ago; by that time none of human being existed on this planet. Yet, they still disappeared from the Earth without any of us. As a matter of fact, the dinosaur is just one of the millions of the extinct species during the past millions of years. Accordingly, some species would not survive in this changing world because of poor adaptation or natural selection as a result they would die out, that is what we could not help.

Furthermore, from a practical point of view, inadequate resources call for restrictions, priorities, and choices. Even though human were so merciful that we could not bear to ignore other species dying out, our society can not make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost. The need of human being and our society, of course, must be put on the first consideration. What is more, the needs are increasing day by day. Overpopulation has become a serious environmental problem, even worse bringing a series of problems like insufficient resources including fresh water, clean air, food, land, energy, and other resources necessary to sustain life. What is more, the society has to take care of lots of society problems which also cost our great efforts and financial well-being. We are not the Lord of nature and we can not do everything. Facing those problems of nature and society, we have to make choice and selectively overcome them one by one. In short, the government and society have to make choices sometimes to make sure at least people need should be met at first and then other things can be considered later.

It is true that some extinction of species is entirely irrelevant for our human being or we could barely do anything to help them out of trouble, however, in some other situations, that animals and plants dying out because of human processes and development of society is a truly fact. With the progress of human civilization and growing population, forests especially rain forests millions of species rely on as their habitats are being quickly destroyed. As we all know, habitats are so particular for animal and plant species to inhabit. What means that, losing their habitat would become a disaster for those species, without proper environments and food. Despite the opposition to the cutting down of rain forests, the problem continues. In addition to the Amazon’s rain forests, many other forests are being cut down as well. The world’ growing population has been a primary cause of the rain forest destruction. More people need land to live on and wood products to consume. What is more, industrial developments take so much resource which other species rely on from natural, meanwhile bring tons of pollutions and dregs into environment causing several environmental problems such as acid rain, air pollutions, water pollutions, global warming, smog etc. All of those problems can destroy thousands of species’ living pattern and land they inhabit, which is out of any adoption or natural selection. Indeed, all these serious issues as a result of human processes would of course damage the living condition of other species in the world.

Simply put, some species would still extinct no matter human processes. However, our society have to save the endangered species because a fire amount of inappropriate human processes or lots of species are such treasure to us, that we have the responsibility for making sure that those species not exist in our offspring’s textbooks.

I agree with the speaker’s board assertion that since as a result of natural processes, lots of species have become extinct(have extincted好像就可以了吧, without human at many times in the geological past, it is not fair to make expanse(expense?) to humans in effort, time, and financial well-being, to save endangered species.
