Should government place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development, as the speaker claims? In my observation, I agree insofar as that government ought to properly unbrace unnecessary restrictions in certain areas of scientific research and development, while in other cases, it is still worth considering carefully that whether this measure is suitable for all scientific research.
To begin with, the main function of scientific research is to unfold mystery of the unknown in our world. I have to concede that government should release restriction in some degree because to improve a better society or life is the basic purpose of most researches. For instance, human anatomy, as a branch of anatomy which is a branch of biology and Medicine which studies primarily the internal structure and design of the structure of living things, was considered to be a kind of serious disrespect to human’s body. In fact, the human anatomy has great contribution to the development of Medicine. The history of anatomy has been characterized, over time, by a continually developing understanding of the functions of organs and structures in the body including the clinical understanding of how damage to these structures effects other functions in the body. Medical treatment methods have also dramatically advanced by the complex techniques including X-ray technology, Sonogram and MRI technology which are all devised basing on Anatomy fundamentally. These high-tech medical equipments are very helpful to doctor to diagnose the situation of patients in certain illness like broken bones, gallstones and tumor inside. We can imagine how doctors get to know to consolidate the broken bones in correct position with the serious restriction of the anatomy research by government. Therefore, to restrict the scientists’ research excessively has passive effect to better the world and even has restricted the development of advancing steps of human beings.
However, to restrict scientific research is not necessary in over all areas, but definitely in certain areas, it have to be necessary. A debate has been discussed consistently around the world: to clone or not to clone. Public opinion generally hold that scientific research which may involve in the problems like morals or ethics should be circumscribed or forbidden, so does the human cloning, though some scientists claim that it would be key to treatment of some deadly diseases. Moreover, the history in protecting pollution informs us, ozone hole which absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun is caused by the abuse of Freon during a few past decades. It is a vivid example to prove that an environmental catastrophe has happened due to governments did not realize to restrict the former scientific research of using Freon. For that matter, some researches which might be harmful or could not be acceptable on the extent of morals should be restricted.
Ultimately, governments have to learn to determine whether the scientific research’s benefits outweigh significantly than passive consequences as an obligation. Additionally, related laws should be legislated to seriously restrict criminal researches and give support to encourage the development of positive ones to better our world.
In sum, government should restrict certain scientific research definitely which would be harmful or dangerous to human beings while other certain researches would be allowed because the benefits for development of human beings. Accordingly, everything in the world has its own two sides, we cannot make generalizations. |
