Does the looking back for an understanding of the past provide little guidance for living in the present which is so new and complex? To the speaker, the answer is absolutely yes. I agree insofar as the fact that our world is fast-changing with great progress nowadays, while whether the function of looking back for an understanding is meaningful for guidance would be worth considering. I would reveal this debate with following details.

To begin with, admittedly, so much technology, thoughts and even religion in the past has not as such an extent of development as in the present. Let me quickly illustrate some of comparison between the past and the present. For the communication, we have been experienced in the process of development from handwritten mail, telephone, mobile phone and the immediate talking or meeting by the camera through internet. Imagine how long time would a delivery for a letter in paper take from China to America a few decades ago, while you can type the words in MSN and then get the response immediately. In addition, it still might be more safety and speedy for a long distance journey by air plane than by ship or other forms of transportation in public generalization. In this sense, each of the advanced steps in the progress helps us to be more convenient, swift and safe. In another word, the way that merely considering the achievement in the past and imitate the measure of formers to solve the present problem is stumped for the consistently developing of our world.

However, we cannot ignore the fact that the development at present has to depend on the experience and even flaws in the past. For one thing, a project of high-tech system’s invention often is unable without the method of ancients which always seem to be old-fashion or ridiculous. Before the weather bureau reports the forecasts nowadays, our ancient had learned how to predict what a day it would be. Firstly, they had abundant experience of the objective observation of the sky changing by moon, clouds, or stars. After that, a wizard would subjectively anticipate the weather in a ceremony according to the experience from the observation of nature phenomenon. In order to be more accurate, the idea has been transmitted and surpassed by the contemporary weather researchers with more objective high-tech machines for analyzing and predicting which are also devised basing on the experience of ancients. Furthermore, the repeated serious catastrophe would be coming again if we are looking forward only. Here is a vivid present example: the ozone hole absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation for the sun is indeed caused by abuse of Freon during a few decades in the last century. If we are not looking back to realize the real reason for leading to the serious environmental situation to stop the abuse of Freon, it is entirely possible that more and more people would be hurt by the ultraviolet radiation or be dead because of the skin cancer.

In sum, I cannot agree with the speaker’s claim. From my point of view, for keeping the contemporary life to develop constantly, we have to concern the essential three aspects: experience of the past circumstance of the present and even the probable result of the future in balance.
