Do the artists instead of the critic give society something of lasting value? I, fundamentally, agree with the author for the reason that most of the artists devoted themselves to the works they were working on, which made extraordinary values for the society in the long run. However, critics play key role, partially, serving to advance and enrich the works of the artists in content and function.

Periods might destroy people's memory of the past, but cannot demolish the constant value brought from art, which prolongs the history for the contemporaries and descendents to respect and learn from their ancestors. It is true, especially in music. Consider, for example, Chopin, the famous Poland patriotic composer, created a host of great works for his motherland when the revolution failed in Warsaw, including "Revolutionary" and "Marching of Minatory ". Easily to imagine, the fabulous rhythm of the works can remind people of their past and be encouraged to cherish their current well-beings. Musicians are adding long term values for their works to the society without consciousness about it.

In the realm of literature, the theory can be well presented and proved, especially for the classics. How the classic works spread and remained? Time may wrinkle the skin, may make walls decay, but literature survives, for the spirit and value within. "To be or not to be", Shakespeare put the constant question for all the human beings to think through their whole lives, wondering what kind of life they are pursuing or what contributions they can make for the development of the society. By answering this question, citizens might reconsider their own behaviors thoroughly, to meet the yardsticks to be qualified persons; by answering this question, expertise might re-examine their personal thoughts when doing research, to check whether the true destination of doing that is to do any good for the whole society. In short, the question, without unchangeable answer with different periods passing by, provokes living people to rethink the essence of human being, which benefits the development of the society.

However, with the notion that no people are able to avoid mistakes, the key role of critics could never be ignored. Common sense tells us that a vast majority of artists are idealists, who see the world in a distinct perspective compared to common people, which provides golden opportunity for them to develop various works. As a result, if left unchecked, the works easily lead people into a wrong direction-- being cynical and unrealistic. For instance, the contemporary anesthetist views the image of people getting suicides as a kind of beauty, which leads to children get wrong information from that. Thanks to the mass media, who evaluate the works of the artists and make audience reconsider the function of arts.

In sum, by creating a more ideal picture for the human being living in the society, artists provide a desirable landscape to provoke people to pursue their ideal lives, along with the critical thinking from the critics to check the way the artists work and guide the idealists to the right direction for development.
