The speaker asserts that the arts reveals society's hidden ideas and impulses of a society. While the assertion has merit, I think it unfairly generalizes about art. Consider two particular art forms: architecture and music. In the most important architectures one consistently see a refection of society's ideas and urges. However, in more important music projects of the most recent decades one sees instead the musician personal visions of an aesthetic ideal.

Turning first to public architecture, one sees in the ancient Chinese traditional architectures forms an impulse to transcend the human condition. Clearly, the most important architecture of that period was built to express awesome and glory of empire. Consider, for example, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. During the ancient Chinese age the most important architecture form was the mausoleum, which reflects an overriding concern for the absolutely power even if the king had gone. During the twentieth century it was first the steel-forged art deco forms and then the sky-scraping office building that dominated public architecture, which reflects the concern for the modern technology and industrial progress.

Turning next to important music and musician, it seems to me that the music from the 1960th to 1980th reflected the attitudes and ideas of the prevailing culture to a far greater extent than today' art. The song of <Sailing the Seas Depends on the Helmsman> fully reflects the worship of Chairman Mao of for Chinese people with which the society at larger was also preoccupied. Later, after open and reform, an emerging genteel class saw itself reflected in the Nationalism of the musician such as Lu su and Jia ding.

But in the most recent years the music has been much different. Consider three of most influential patients in the first twenty years: LI yuchun, Dao Lang and Cui jian. The musical style of Cui jian is rock who is the father of the rock music. Was the reason for the appearance of Cui jian music a reflection of the China society' hidden impulse for this great revolution---open and reform, or did Cui jian merely reflect the complex psychological profile of the an eccentric artist? The success of the singer of Dao Lang only uses one night. His special voice which expresses sounds of nature stocks the heart of every one. but are the special voice a reflection of some societal impulse, or merely the emotional drain of a alone pedestrian? As the champion of the super-girl in 2006, Li yuchun is a girl with mid-sexual beauty which the all the Chinese people like. However do we regard it as a popularity of the feminist, or hunt for novelty? In three cases, it seems that the art reflected the artist but not the society.

In sum, in the art of music we can observe a shift from styles and themes reflecting form the impulse of society to the personal urges. In contrast, the more public art form of architecture has always mirrored society ideas and impulses.
