TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

Both practical applications and personal interests are significant reasons for scholars and researchers to conduct their experiments and researches for the profound contributions they offer to the society and endless pleasure to themselves. There is no necessity to discuss which of the two elements is more vital, but great benefit about how to combine them.

Generally, most scholars and researchers receive their funds from public organizations and government, namely all the tax payers. It would be irresponsible for them to exclude the society needs while financially supported by it. A society, for example, with serious unemployment, has to take care of issues of people who are out job. What would it be at such an urgent time if all the socialists and economists ignore the emergency while research problems like urban design or city greening programs according to their own interests? The society would inevitably encounter more problems as some jobless people find illegal means to make a living. Since tax payers have paid scientists to help maintain the balance of the society, they have rights to require a contribution received from scholars and researchers.(逻辑点不错,就是例子的力度感觉弱了点。)

Without doubt, the best motive force is one's interest when doing difficult and arduous scientific researches.(后面呢? And it is even better to effectively combining one's interest and social needs in order to fulfill personal achievement and lead financial support to a virtuous circle. Social demands and researchers' own interest are never contraries.(谓语不好用are吧,用should是不是好点。 For example, the great Wright brothers, who created the first plane in the world, were simply trying to realize their dream aroused from childhood. The brilliant brothers also anticipated the possible impact on the whole transportation system afterwards. After that, they founded the Wright plane company which worth millions of dollar. Without ambition and interest, Wright brothers could never create the first plane; without the contribution they made for society, it is not possible to develop their dream to a giant company.

people may have no clue about whether a new discovery or invention has a social significance at the first moment. The best way, in most circumstances, is to follow one's own interest. But this never indicates that any scientific research can ignore social demands. Instead, the requirement from society should be always kept in scientists' minds. Many interesting inventions are only results as people try to entertain themselves or satisfy curiosity, but out of expectation, to have changed the world. People in ancient time had no idea about what is like on the side of the ocean, nor did not know what may be found on the moon decades ago, but we just want to explore and firmly believe such research would make some contributions.(光believe有啥用啊~用事实说话——焦点访谈)我找了半个小时例子…………………………

It is the curiosity and interest that drive people work hard to find one and another truth, and the followed contributions are results delicately concern about social issues. Together, they offer us a better world.

40"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

I partially agree with the author's assertion that it is justifiable to pursuing one's interest, however unusual or idiosyncratic it may seem. They should not be concerned with whether their outcomes make contribution to the whole society.(你就又抄了下题目,考官应该会很反感吧) In my opinion, it is human nature to pursue what they love. However, one should also consider the social value from some other angles, such as economy or philosophy.

Each of us has our own interests and dreams, which is the driving force in our life. History never lacks examples of talents(Chinglish?) who pursue their personal interest. Take the Wright brothers as an example(你和组长的例子一样一样的啊), they dreamed of that one day they can fly in the sky like birds, which seemed like a crazy idea at that time. But it is their “unrealistic” dream which made the world smaller, and brought people closer together. Perhaps they had never thought they have the duty to devote themselves to their society, but they invented the airplane for(删掉) in order to finish their dream.(这个例子论证得挺不错) Similar examples can be seen in many fields, one of the most famous economists, Keynes who was major in mathematics, but he was interested in economics and creates his famous classical work we briefly called ‘General Theory’, which still play an indispensible role in solving the latest economic crisis. To some extent, individuals who work for their interest or dream may create outstanding accomplishment, because they will spare no efforts to realize their solitary goal. Although they may not consider what benefits they can bring to the other people or then whole society, they make contribution to humankinds in their own practical way.(这段论证到点子上了)

Under some circumstance, however, individuals should consider their social value in the process of realizing their unusual interests. From the economic angle, it is apparently in modern field of scientific research for the reason that many problems were not simply than ever before. In the past, one may tackle a problem by oneself with little economic cost. But it is totally a different case in nowadays. Most of professors need fund from private company or government to finish their research, under this circumstance;(分号不是乱点的,这显然该把分号点在under前,逗号在circumstance后) no one wants to invest money on researches with little social value.(停住,你上面说要考虑社会价值,后面又转到道德观去了。 From the moral level, although those scholars who are interested in the Nuclear Weapon will satisfy their curiosity about high technology, people who love peace will not consider they make contribution to humankinds.
In sum, scholars should go on to pursue their interest like ever before. On the one hand, they should consider its social value whether in long-term or in short-term. Otherwise, they can hardly finish their research which needs relative high cost. On the other hand, they should obey the basic moral standard and realize their dream.

TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
WORDS: 355          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2009-8-8 20:40:12

It is hard to say whether a goal is worthy or not without considering any restrictions or the interest it represents, let alone the means to attain it is justifiable or not. Therefore, in my opinion, before we evaluate the efficiency of the means, we should at first have a clear notion about the goal we set

Whether a goal is worthy or not depends largely on whose interests it represents. And what's the standard of a worthy goal? Here I would like to state my viewpoint based on two aspects—social value and private value. Take the famous economist—Keynes as an example, whose goal in 1929 was to build a new theory about macroeconomics and he eventually found an effective way to overcome the economic crisis in 20th century. Apparently, his goal is worthy for the reason that he realize his own personal value and also promote the development of society. Another instance is the literary works. One of my favorite novels is ‘The Kite runner’; the author’s finished his valuable goal because the public are benefited from his masterpiece. Whether from personal’s angle or social angle they are all worthwhile .And another example is the Swine flu, which usually happens among pigs, has deprived of lives recently. It is really worthwhile to overcome this problem through the cooperation of all countries.

However, there some people who pursue their goal without considering the other’s interests or the social cost. With the rapid development of modern industry, thousands of factories are founded. The manager’s goal is maximum their profits, but at the same time, those factories polluted the environment seriously and damage the local residents’ healthy. Under this circumstance, if the manager does not care for their social cost, their goal is not a worthy one from the public’s angle. But it is worthwhile in the eye’s of the manager. So, from this simple example we can see that whether a goal is worthy or not relies on whose interests it represents. Meantime, some goals are unworthy from the humankinds' moral angle. Such as the human cloning research, which apparently disobey human beings' basic moral standard that each of is unique. Generally speaking, the goal that will promote social development, or enhance the living standard of citizens is worthwhile.

Even assuming that we have set a worthy goal, the way we attain it relies on two aspects. In the first place, we should consider the basic economic cost. If a beneficial goal costs two much which beyond our budget, of course, we should give up or consider it later. Saving wild animals, for instance, is a worthy goal that can help maintain the balance in nature. So money spent on protecting the endanger creature is money well invested, but it does not mean that we must to save every endanger animals. On the one hand, it is natural selection and we should not against the laws; on the other hand, given the limited revenue, we human beings still have lots of immediate problems to solve, we can hardly spent enough money on saving the animals, we must allocate fund on it in a reasonable way. In the second place, we should consider the moral factors. it is unmoral to realize one's goal through damaging the other's interest. Which can illustrate by the example of the factories above mentioned.

In sum, before we set a goal, we should ensure the goal is worthy which would not hurt the others; then we had better find a proper way which has the minimum opportunity cost both in economy and in human moral.

TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."

Admirable is the firm determination to achieve one's goal regardless the difficult and arduous process, but it is never wise to unnecessarily embrace every potentially detrimental means, taking persons involved or the whole society into consideration in the long run.

As for individuals, though the anticipated destiny is appealing, ignoring detrimental aspects can result in both a less favorable result and other unexpected outcomes. Generally, people tend to find excuse to purge them of a charge when the goal seems to be just. It is not uncommon to find a man who does not exist to show shadowy fight against the dangerous world to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless and the powerless. Thus encouragement in movies raise a false conclusion among people especially teenagers: to bring a clean society is to kill all the wicked. However, Aristotle marked two thousand years ago, "the rule of law is better than the rule of any individuals." It is dangerous to put the whole law system aside and take actions totally based on people's own judgment. Some black sheep in society may be kicked out, but the whole regulations and orders are messed up, leaving the whole society paralyzed.

More seriously, for countries, narrowly focusing on a goal and ignoring other aspects can cause a big lost rather than achievement. Untold inter-country wars have proved this tragedy long numerous times. The Second World War, for example, which is caused by selfish desire of a few countries, put the whole world in hell. For those countries that started the two wars, agreeable are the victories that can bring much sources and lands, and significantly beneficial to their own development. However, for the rest that lost their homelands, thousands of people can be homeless and homeless let alone the environment could be seriously damaged. If the goal is paid by the sacrifice of majority, it is not justifiable.

Actually, every unscrupulous mean which has been put into practice is a result of both shortsighted and egoism. Some individuals or organizations that put their goals beyond everything may achieve some benefits, but such benefits are at the expense of other relatively enormous sacrifice. It is absurd to close all the factories in order to eliminate environment pollution; it is ridiculous to recall all the cars in expecting to reduce traffic accidents; it also too foolish to kill all the patients when try to control a fatal virus. One the contrary, if during the pursuit process for a goal, people carefully evaluate all the possible means and choose a multiple-win one, a virtuous circle can be enjoyed as well.

Justifiable or not, the judgment of means should never narrowly based on people who take them, but on every possible influenced aspects, people, organizations and environment. The thriving of society, as a whole, is the final goal we need to pursuit.

Whether a goal is worthy or not depends largely on whose interests it represents. And what's the standard of a worthy goal?(第一句是观点,第二句就反驳,似乎不太好) Here I would like to state my viewpoint based on two aspects—social value and private value.

Even assuming that we have set a worthy goal, the way we attain it relies on two aspects. In the first place, we should consider the basic economic cost.

TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
WORDS: 533          TIME: 00:52:36+10min(棕色部分)          DATE: 2009-8-8 11:11:27

Retrospect to human history, dazzling innovations and discoveries have added fuel to our society. Ironically, many scholars and researchers were not intended to push on the society in the first place; instead they just follow their own interest and curiosity.

Indeed, it is not simple to make a judgment if an invention or discovery would make contributions to society or not; in reality, researchers and scientists even cannot make sure whether they would get to success. Many discoveries were even made by accident. The discovery of penicillin can vividly exemplify this statement. Its discoverer, Flemming had no idea what the substance was in his laboratory at first. It was not until he found that such material could act as antiseptic that penicillin became widely used in the world and have saved countless lives. Same things went with the discovery of X-ray. Many occasional or fantastic researches may have profound effects on the progress of the society or the bliss of human beings. Now we may understand why Bill Gates has set up a foundation to sponsor some seemingly “ludicrous” scientific projects.

Furthermore(前面没有提到兴趣,这里却对兴趣来个furthermore,有点不连贯。), concentrating on achieving a huge success and making contributions may constrain one's gifts or talents. It is very possible that he or she could hardly focus on his or her researches with so many desires. Sometimes a strong willingness would produce counterproductive effects. Then consequently, instead of making contributions, scientists may not reach anything but disappointment. On the contrary, if driven by their own curiosity, scholars could best exploit their brilliant gifts and fantastic imagination. Thus they could be much more effective and efficient. Interests play an indispensible role in scientific fields, which would give scientists enduring power and promote them to go further. Take one mathematician for instance. ChenJingrun who had an intensive interest in mathematics, spent days and nights in front of his table and forgot to eat or sleep, calculating, deducing, and testifying. Finally, he nearly proved the Goldbach’s conjecture(学习了) to be right. Undoubtedly, thanks for his efforts, he push the research of number theory forward. But notice, from the very beginning, he barely thought of the "fame" or "contributions" stuff; he just followed his mind and his intuition.

Nevertheless, no matter how intensive the interests are, one should stick to the principle that their curiosity should not have the potential to undermine the whole society. Otherwise, one should immediately stop his research. Failing to have a rightful direction, more Frankensteins would emerge in the scientific fields. What if some day we suddenly encounter with someone else who identifies us and tell us that he or she is one of our cloning? What if some day time becomes vague or still and our dead grandfather stand in front of us without any warning? What if one day our Mother Earth is completely destroyed by nuclear weapons invented by ourselves and no lives survive? Surely, we do not want any of these scenarios come true.

Taking into account what has been discussed above driven by their curiosity and interests, scholars and researchers can go further in their work. But in the first place, they should assess their interests to ensure them will not bring perils to the larger society.
