TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 503 (558) TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2009-8-10 15:39:11
Some old building are tore down to make room for the skyscrapers; paper-based materials are gradually replaced by electronic data. Seeing all these, many would probably find some dilemma for themselves: old or new, tradition or modernization. They force themselves to choose one of them, failing to see their essential connections.
Admittedly, it is globalization and modernization that have profound effects on our new society. As a result, some traditions have been weakened. Take Chinese traditional festival, the Spring Festival, for instance. In the old days, according to the Chinese myths, during the Spring Festival, people would light up fireworks to threaten evils and beasts in order to bliss a safe, healthy, and happy new year. Traditionally, the extended families would gather together and have a fabulous meal. However, living in the big cities, life pace is faster than ever previous days. Many people even have no time to go home under a high living stress. What is more, fireworks are banned in the cities of causing fires. Consequently, they have to face the white and cold walls by themselves, quietly and lonely.
Furthermore, there is some dross existing in the tradition which would prevent a round development of modern society. In the old days, women had no rights to work or vote; black people were treated as an inferior class. Along with the development of the society, such traditional discriminations have been gradually abandoned. Just as Barack Obama said in his Election Speech, Ann Nixon Cooper, the 106-year-old black women, now has the right to touch the screen and reach for her ballot. Rejecting these traditions can create a boon on the long-term progress of human society.
Some brilliant cultures and customs in the tradition, however, are still work for the modern society. For instance, the values upon which human beings rely to construct the world--honesty and hard-working, curiosity and brevity, hope and persistence, loyalty and patriotism--are old. But on no account could we afford to neglect these things. Without them, our nation's wheels would run out of control; our people would lose the sense of who they are and where they came from.
To make one final point, we should never deny that modern people have preserved and carried forward so many traditions well. Olympic Games, which originated from ancient Greece, now still, have its charm and imperishable motivation. People from almost every country gather together, forgetting the hatreds and wars, and pursuing "higher, faster, and stronger". Furthermore, we are grateful to see that the awareness of preserving the traditions has been raised among many people. Many traditional historical sites have been restored and protected by modern people carefully: in Shakespeare's hometown England, timber houses in the small village has attracted so many tourists from all over the world to visit; some traditional costumes are enjoying their popularities: in China, nowadays people with rising numbers are in favor of the "TangZhuang" (a type of clothes which were fashionable in Tang Dynasty thousands of years ago); many traditional musical instruments are still played by folk people.
Indeed, some draff in the tradition should be thrown away. But tradition and modernization are not incompatible; instead, best use of the tradition could serve us to make more advancement of modern society. By handling the balance between them appropriately, the modern world could enjoy a more colorful future. |
