130. How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.
I agree with this statement that adults have not yet learned how to raise children who are the future of the society. At the same time, I concede the extent of children’s socialization is of great importance, while it might not be the key factor that determines the destiny of society.
Today more and more children cannot build harmonious relationships with people around them, even with their parents. The existence of this phenomenon dues partly to the fact that the environment for children’s growth is quite different from the past. With the development of science and technology, modern children receive better education and more information than their parents, so it is not surprising that children act more excellently at school today. While many parents are proud of their children’s intelligence, they still wonder how to raise their children to be eligible people. As children grow up in a solitary circumstance, most of them lack some precious qualities, such as the leadership and ability of cooperation, which play important roles in human’s way to success according to many socialists. Consequently, it is necessary for us to consider how to raise children to bring a better society.
Undoubtedly, the destiny of society depends on children who are the masters of future. There are various factors which influence these children’s
development, therefore it is hasty to conclude that socialization is the one of greatest importance. Socialization refers to the process of learning one’s culture and how to live within it. For individuals, socialization provides necessary resources for participating social activities. For the society, inducting all individuals into its moral norms, attitudes, values, motives, language and symbols is the methods by which social and cultural continuity are attained. Once the progress of socialization is blocked, there would produce negative effect on the development of science and technology correspondingly. However, in a highly socialized society, individuals can at most act as eligible civilians to the society, and they still need other qualities to refine their characters to better adapt to the society.
For instance, we need to pay more attention to enhance children’s ethical and mental standard, which cannot be benefited from socialization. Children need to be taught to respect others and cooperate with teammates, otherwise a single one cannot succeed however strong he is. Moreover, children should also learn to be self-confident and independent, in which case they would find their positions in society and achieve their self-values. All these could be defined as individual improvement. Individual improvement is essential for a person’s growth, which teaches a person how to live with others and how to recognize oneself.
Therefore we should establish a balance between socialization and individual improvement. On the part of society, socialization leads to civilians’ conformity with moral norms and legislation, and it ensures a stable society. What’s more, socialization provides principles that confine children to be eligible civilians. On the part of children, individual improvement gives them a sense of who they are and guide them to live properly. If we can effectively propel the process of socialization and individual improvement, both the whole society and children themselves will benefit a lot.
In sum, the statement overrates the importance of socialization and neglect the necessity of individual improvement, while establishing a balance between them will ensure a better society. |
