TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
As one who always wear color shirts reveals he is a vivid man and easy to talk. I agree that from the look, dress and act, one can easily show his or her attitudes and interests. However, when it comes to the notion we can know the society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people,I strongly disagree with it, for it is hard to get all-round value of today's multiple society.
From the begining, one's cloth and behaviors always act as a key to let us know a person. A man who wear a tie seems value his possition very much and a girl dressed in a expensive dress always be treated nice. Anyway, people use clothing and other decoration to show their characters as well as attitude. I tend to dress in red to reavl my passionate and indicate I would like to help other, and my shirt implies I was a college studenct and not in work. Moreover, we often judge a man by his act rather than his words, that is, we think one's act totally imply his attitude. Companys like its emplyees do work effeicently, and the director require the interviewer to judge the behavior of interviewees to decide whether he or she is the person they need. Although a employee’s ability cannot be domonstrated untill he had worked in one or two months, the experienced interviewer can always make a basic judgement on the interviewee for his or his appearence and behavior.
However, when it somes to the queation whether people's clothing and behavior can reflect a society's ideas and values, I cannot agree with the speaker any more. In fact, today's society were not a completely whole. Someone who clamor for the speaker's assertion will cite examples as the woman in Arab still dress the clothes which reavels little of their face, almost two eyes, which indicate the the society value less of woman. They are only few exceptions. Yet, countries today are more of multiple culture society, the most telling example is American society, which is famous for its multi-culture characters. And any people in this society represent his or her own community’s or group's idea and attitude instead of the society as a whole. In fact, the society has long been lost a homogenous culture. We can easily find a person who is African American, or he is a youngster form the sorth, from his appearence or acts. But it is totally difficult to find the similaity of two Americans who claims both of them hold the same American value. According, they have their own ways to understand the American as well as the American way, therefore, act differently with each other.
Finally, some value of society is hard to express by dressing and behavioring. For example, Americans value the authority of law, but this can be hardly seen from appearence or act unless we live with them and concerning about the news report or experiencing a real case. Therefore, just depend on our observation of people's appearance and behavior to judge a society's ideas and values, we will not get a well-round result of it. |
