48."The study of history places too much emphasis on individual. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
The author claims that the study of history should focus more on groups of people rather than individual, since the most significant events and trends in history were made possible by groups of people with forgotten identities.
I concede that the effect of groups of people is essential to the development of society, however, the famous few plays more crucial roles, hence, they deserve these emphasis by society.
Nothing great can be achieved without the support from large groups of people in history, after all the power of individuals is limited. Without these forgettable groups of people, reform of the society would never come up, just like that without the power from the engine vehicle can not move forward. Consider, for instance, hundreds of thousands of soldiers laid down their lives on the battle field in wars, in order to protect their country and people, while few of these martyrs are remembered or emphasized in history of text books. But their contribution and sacrifice for establishing our democratic and free nation can never be neglected as well as the famous few. Hence, the study of history should not ignore the groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten.
However, the crucial positions of famous few in history can never be shaked.
Although the power of advancement of history came from huge amounts of people, it was these famous few who were regard as immortals that controlled the key direction and leaded the followers to success. No significant movements are attributable to leaderless groups in history. For example, under the leadership of Martin Luther King, African American Civil Rights Movement achieved its purpose that made the black owned the rights as well as the white;under the governance of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, American economy and industry recovered from the Depression which made America came back to the right way of development. These famous few provided the initial spark for these development, which had longterm influence for not only populace but the whole society, and finally gave the right direction to achieve success. Thus, the emphasis on individuals is due to the fact that these individuals owned superior leadership skills and personality charm, which enable them to lead the populace and at the same time be honored in history.
Besides these individuals' contribution to history, some other equally significant reasons also justify our emphasis on them.Through the study of individuals, we can learn the cause and consequence of historical events easily and conveniently. Consider, for instance, the Renaissance in the art, by studying its typical representatives like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, we have a better understanding on the development of art in that period time. Moreover, emphasis on the famous few has a valuable effect that people in current age can get inspiration and faith, which have positive influence in their daily life. From the famous painting The Sunflower by Van Gogh, we see the great hope behind the painting that to pursue a bright future and from speech I Have A Dream by Martin Luther King, we appreciate the great value of ideal that to build up an equal society. Hence, by studying famous individuals, not only can we gain knowledge of history, but also obtain inspiration to guide us in everyday life.
To sum up, the importance of groups of people in history can not be ignored, as they had made contribution to advance the development of society. Yet, it is he famous few who provide perspectives and visions of developing, and that they deserve to be immortalised and emphasized by history. |
