TOPIC: ISSUE136 - "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
Is absence of choice a rare circumstance in life? As far as I am concerned, although most people have experienced at least once in his life the feeling of being desperate, actually there are always choices in our lives .
Admittedly, many things will happen out of our expectation and sometimes we indeed have no choice but to face the incidents. For example, you can not choose a car accident that killed your best friend this morning not to have happened, or the global economical recession greatly undermining your booming business to stop this afternoon. Things happen according to their own laws regardless of human's wills. Hardly anyone could choose what may happen to him.
But when it comes to how to face the incidents, we do have choices. Whatever happens there are always different kinds of reactions, ranging from negative to positive, from stupid to wise. Anyone feel desperate should be aware that he or she is suffering for this feeling not because there is no choice, but because s/he is a poor choice-maker.
So why do people have the delusion that they have no choices?
To start with, many people do not have the will to create their own destiny. Some people, for a certain reasons, falsely believe that they do not have the ability to create their own destiny. I have witnessed numerous kids in China, born in poor families, feeling chances for them to be admitted by key universities are slim, give up their dreams at an early age and become a member of millions of cheap labors in the society. Many years later, when they meet their old classmates, who due to the education they received are now earning a handsome salary and living a happy life, they simply complained that lord do not provide them with as good environment as their friends’. They never noticed that there are many young men and women coming from the poor families have made a difference in their lives thanks to their own hard work. As the Indian poet Tagore said, man is born child, his power is the power of growth. Too much emphasize on extrinsic conditions often give rise to a negative attitude towards life which strip people from fearlessly working hard to change their present existence. And no change in existence, in turn, will reinforce their false belief that nothing could be done and our destiny is predetermined. That’s how the vicious circular worked. And people bogged in it will forever believe they have no choice in their lives.
Lack of intelligence is another great factor attributing to people's helpless feeling. By assuming that A and B, both are extremely unsatisfactory, are the only available solutions to the problem, one may simply choose A/B as the final conclusion. However, what s/he overlooks is that there actually exist other better alternatives, yet without wisdom and knowledge, one often fails to figure out these better choices. For example, many mayors in China are confronted with the conflict between city modernization and preserve of old buildings, wise mayors know how to keep a balance between them, taking full advantage of old buildings as a precious treasure to create unique city identity, fledge the city cultural details as well as attract more tourists, which in turn will accelerate the development of the city. By comparison, other mayors simply believe that old buildings must give way to the construction of broader roads and higher buildings or the opposition--to protect old buildings a city must sacrifice its economic development. The latter two ways often leaves mayors into deep sorry. But do they really have no choice? What they lack is mere wisdom.
As discussed above, although we can not choose about what life might present, we do have our choice concerning how to confront these incidents. May lord grant every individual the will as well as the intellect to make wise choice. |
