TOPIC: ARGUMENT53 - Thirteen years ago, researchers studied a group of 25 infants who showed signs of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli such as an unusual odor or a tape recording of an unknown voice. They discovered that these infants were more likely than other infants to have been conceived in early autumn, a time when their mothers' production of melatonin-a hormone known to affect some brain functions-would naturally increase in response to decreased daylight. In a follow-up study conducted earlier this year, more than half of these children-now teenagers-who had shown signs of distress identified themselves as shy. Clearly, increased levels of melatonin before birth cause shyness during infancy and this shyness continues into later life.

The author concludes that the shyness of children is due to the increased levels of melatonin and may last into their later life. To support it, he cites evidences 1) 25 infants showed sigh of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli; 2) their birth time is in early autumn which the melationin of their mother is incresed;3) the following study indicate that the these children--now teenagers indentified themselces as shy. In my view, the argue have soem flaws to make it unconvining as it stands.

Firstly, the auther fails to give clearly evidence to indicate the mild distress of infants is shy. From the common sence, we know the infants always shows mild distress when exposed to the unfamiliar stimulis, the distree may a sign of worry, fear or excitement rather than shyness. Moreover, although it is indicate as shyness, there lacks evidence to indicate it is a result of the melationin----which was increased when the baby born. Is that the result of other hormones or the some duges, or perhaps because of heredity? Without eliminate other alternations, the auther cannot convince me using the showed eicdences.

Secondly, even if the distrss is shyness and the infants do have impact of their mother's hormone of melaton, there is no certain information to imply the affected brain function is related to the shyness of infants. Do it impact on the listening area of brain or the eyesight instead of the feeling of shyness? or do it reduce the IQ but not cause shyness? There are many other assumptions than the author provides. Therefore, to make the analysis more clear, it is necessary to rule out other reasons but leave the true one.

Thirdly, the following study also have flaws. The teenagers indentified themselves as shy, but is it true? In other words, do they tell the truth and indentifey clearly about their feelings? They are just teenagers which are easy being misled by the a question. Do the study have proper queations and accurate measures to test the reported shyness? Or do the teenagers always feel shyness which not because of the sudden interview of the study? Only if more evidence are provieding ,do the result convincing.

In sum, the argument is well-designed but not well-supported. To strengthen the argue, the author should provide clearly evidence to indicate the sigh of infants is shyness and it is cause by the melatonin in certain brain function which related to the feeling of shyness. Then, more information to show up the teenages’ feeling is shyness and they keep the feeling from very young.

Do it impact on the listening area of brain or the eyesight instead of the feeling of shyness? or do it reduce the IQ but not cause shyness? There are many other assumptions than the author provides. They are just teenagers which are easy being misled by the a question. Do the study have proper queations and accurate measures to test the reported shyness? Or do the teenagers always feel shyness which is not because of the sudden interview of the study? 这句的逻辑有点问题 我不明白作者的意思了哈 Only if more evidence are provieding ,do the result convincing.

In sum, the argument is well-designed but not well-supported. 楼主这篇的逻辑有些没有处理好 最好能够明确逻辑错误的类型 处理起来也比较明了 嘿嘿 纯属个人感想 加油加油!!
