The speaker asserts that artist gives society something of lasting value, not the critic. I concede that artist creats many works fo art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, however, critic is as important as artist who also gives society something of lasting value.
Admittedly, artist gives the society something of lasting value which influnce us so much. The artist provides us amount of visible and audible works, which could cultivate our taste and lift our spirits. No matter what kind of art, when we encounter it, can conjure up our feelings such as a sense of beauty, pleasure. For example, when we hear Beethoven's music, especially Fate Symphony, we could feel that people never give in to their fate. Or when we see Michaelangelo's sculpture, through the different figures, it brings us the feeling of grand and power. Morever, art will produce a far-reaching impact on the society. Hence, the artist could give society something of value which cold last forever.
However, we could not ignore the importance of critic. The critic has profound knowledge and unique aesthetic concept which could enhance a layman's appreciation and understanding of art. Commonly, the critic is famliar with the artist and his or her work, and has their own insights. For instance, Van Gogh's some works are so abstract, and without the guidance of the critic pople could not comprehend those works objectvely. Hence, though sometimes the critic is not able to make correct evalution because of some fators, most of the critic could evalute the works objectively and guide the layman in their own sights. The critic also gives the society something of lasting value.
Furthermore, in some respects the critic can benefit the artist. On one hand, the critic can explore some potential artists and make the artists' works famous to the public. On the other hand, the critic could help the artist find out their shortage and urge the artist perfect his or her works. Even though the critic looks like harsh, it indeed helps the artist accomplish his or her works perfectly. Hence, the critic plays a vial role in the course of arts.
In sum, the artist and the critic supplement each other. The artist gives the society lots of works which enrich people's spiritual life and they will not fade as time goes on, while the critic provides an impetus to artistic development and a better understanding of arts to ordinary people. Both of them give the society something of lasting value. |
