TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Should our professors in college work outside the ivory tower in order to improve their teaching quality? This purpose made by the speaker really seems quite innovative in that as far as I know, few universities around the world has made such policies to encourage professors to do extra job other than teaching. However, I basically don't agree with the speaker's assertion, as discussed below.
Generally speaking, I don't deny that for some certain departments, finding a work outside the college may has some merits, or sometimes the work finds them. For instance, many world famous astronomical physicists are employed by major national research institutes (such as NASA and so forth) as well as teaching in universities. For them, serving the nation would be a much more honored and meaningful task compared to merely transmitting his own knowledge to his students. As for the superstars in a certain scientific field, their nation is always more than happy to offer funds and jobs to them, since every significant progress they made would definitely bring fame and benefit to the nation. In other cases, professors in engineering department always find themselves popular in some major industrial projects, for they are able to offer some suggestions of value, rendering the process of the projects much safe and efficient. By setting themselves into the latest industrial projects, the professors are likely to gain the edge-cutting knowledge of a certain subject, which would in turn inspire his own thoughts in both teaching and researching fields
Nevertheless, the popularity of professors in human resource market doesn't necessarily serve as a positive force in term of education. The reason is quite simple--it takes time to work elsewhere. When discussing this issue, we must take some facts account, which is the most reputable professors seldom have time for teaching. Even when they do, there are always only handful students who could enjoy such privilege. We can fully understand that it is not easy for the top professors to squeeze their precious time for graduates, but as for the whole faculty as the speaker mentioned, this propose would be totally unreasonable. Such behaviors would only end up in a degeneration of their instruction, rather than improvement. We shall never forget the teacher's main job is teaching so if they want to improve their teaching skill, practices and innovations are what they really need.
Besides, ivory towers should be a place where the atmosphere is pure and clean; there shouldn't be too much monetary issues involved. Imagine if the professors and teachers are all engaged in making money for themselves, who would care about the students and their courses anymore? In the worst case scenario, students could be infected by such habits and become very mundane; more and more students would choose to drop their education when they think they have found a good way for living rather than struggle with their researching program. Such situation would be indeed a disaster for a nation's academic sphere in the long run; authorities would find it too late when they try to settle the problem down.
In the final analysis, I conclude that for some really outstanding professors and researchers, the work outside the academic world would be favorable, even necessary sometime. However, for most faculties serving at the front line of education, my point of view is we should not encourage them to do extra job, which would do no more than deprive their time and passion on teaching. |
