TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Is it necessary for all faculty to work in professions related to courses they teach in society , with the purpose to improve the quality of instruction at the college and
university?
In my view , I do not agree the opinion in some degree .

The college and university is a important place in which students will learn the most useful knowledge which could lay foundation for their future professions
and
develop their thoughts and abilities to deal with problems that they will meet during working . So there should be a high requirement of the quality of instruction. due to the quality of teachers play a vital part on the instruction, we should pay attention to the abilities and knowledge teachers have .however, I do not think that all faculty need to work in other jobs relevant to what they teach .

As far as we concerned, the energy of one person is limited. The more time teacher spends on working outside, the less time they can use on teaching. With the rapid development of economic, now more and more teachers devote themselves to do jobs outside the academic world so that they can get higher salaries .as a result of it, some teachers give up the teaching job to find a new job in society which can earn more money. It is often to see that teachers who have other work in society are always hasty to leave the classroom after finishing the class and you can hardly find him/she in campus except in class. It indicates that students have less chance to communicate with teachers and get little help from teachers in study and life. Teachers may simply means a man who speaks in class but not a really teacher without any communication with their students. As a teacher, he/she also have reasonability for guiding and caring students besides teaching.

Nevertheless, it is required some teachers in some special areas to do some work outside the academics world. For example, teachers who major in teaching law had better do some work like a lawyer or have some experiences in the court. Only having these practices can they not only instruct laws to students but also can combine the laws with life to enable students easier to understand laws and know how to use them in practice. In addition, teacher who major in architecture is an architect at the same time. if they just have a great knowledge without any work on designing a building , what they can teach students is of no use . On the contrary, some areas like math and history have no necessity to word outside the academics world. The ultimate thing for these teachers is to studying in their subjects further to teach students more.

Nowadays, education is more and more important for a country. How to improve the education quality is a problem which should consider many factors to solve it. There are many measures we can take to improve the quality of instruction in college and university, such as change the method of teaching and offer teachers more opportunities to study further.

In conclusion, we should think twice whether encourage all faculties to work outside the academics world. Given the positive and negative influence, we cannot claim that the quality of instruction will be improved just because of all faculty do some relevant jobs in their part time.
