When facing with the issue that whether distinguished figures or forgettable and nameless groups of people make more contributions to the significant historical events and trends in human society, people may realize it extremely difficult to arrive at the consensus in respect that they have obtained different experiences and conflicting values. As far as I am concerned, although we can hardly ignore the groups' contributions in several certain aspects, key individuals, the ones who are considered as "the famous few", tend to being worthwhile for those who study history to place much more emphasis on.
To begin with, admittedly, I am inclined to agree with the speaker's statement insofar as certain groups of people act as more crucial roles than the key individuals in several significant events and trends in history at times. After all, it is unfair to give all credit to "the famous few" .Meanwhile, the efforts of one man sometimes appear to be not sufficient to result in an impressive shift in human society. Actually, no one can deny that fact that the efforts of all the members of group which is a gradual process tend to spark revolutions. Paul Ehrlich and Steven Alfred, two chemists who discovered a drug to those who are afflicted with gonorrhea, are a case in point. Without their discovery, there would have been no suspicion that many people still live in a suffering life. Considering another example, it was a group of painters such as Michelangelo, Rafael, and Leonardo da Vinci who caused the renaissance by depicting hardships of ordinary people in their paintings. Thereby, several trends and events in history are possible made by groups of people.
Aside from what I have mentioned above, nonetheless, history does inform us that it is key individuals who are the driving force of groups of people. Obviously, it comes as no surprise that a key individual provides the indispensable impetus for groups of people. Moreover, there is no escaping the fact that it is a key individual who directs the groups' activities and has exemplary leadership skills. For instance, a country's prevailing policies concerning the public's daily life are derived from its political leaders; and, what managers think about evolves into their corporations' future strategies. Comparing with groups of people, hence, key individuals seem to hold powerful criticalness
Another reason why I believe we had better pay more attentions to key figures is that many profound inventions and discoveries in the past are almost attributed not to nameless and leaderless groups but to "the famous few". Actually, for historians, studying groups in history is secondary for the reason that historical groups usually have no definitive character. Furthermore, those celebrated individuals are of disputably representative character. Consequently, it is their character such as diligence, persistence and braveness which leads to influential inventions and discoveries. For example, it is Beethoven who left the world with so many infective melodies; It is William Harvey who discovered the circulation of the blood; It is Columbus who successfully discovered the American continent.
In summary, from what has been mentioned above we can come to the conclusion with little doubt that it is key individuals who shape that history without several historical exceptions. Undeniably, it is high time that any government, which is ever blind to this, may take some relevant measures to encourage their public to pay more attentions to prominent figures in history. |
