What does critic really bring to the artists, the art devotees and the society? Some argue that it is the artist rather than the critic who gives the society something of lasting value. However, the view toward critic and art may be too narrow and bigoted in some aspects.

To begin with, although it is this artist who create numerous great works and build some famous genres, which take great value to the society, we can not erase the fact the critics help us understand these sutras more easily and deeply. Due to these notable artists’ jumpy ideology and unusual mode of thinking, some of their work will be hard to understand it. As a critic, one could enhance our appreciation and understanding of art by providing an object and explaining it with praise and criticism. A critic who is familiar with a artist and his or her works might have certain insight about these works than some layperson would be, through which people could have a better understand of they. For instance, Monet’s famous painting, “Impression: sunrise” was not understood by the mass initially. But with the explanation and analysis of the critics it become impossible to appreciate this legendary work. Happens same thing in the paintings of Van Gogh, it is difficult to get what he thought and want to expressed in his works without the help and direction of the critics. In short, critics help more people understand these great work and play an important role in popularize art, giving immense value to the art and society.

In addition, besides the big help of critic to spectators, critics also serve a vital role in improving these artists and their works, which are because of two reasons. On one hand, critics can provide useful feedback and constructive criticism about artists, which, if taken into heart and correct it careful, can result in better work. Artists are always self-confident with themselves and their works and it is difficult for them to find their shortcoming, especially soon after a work is done, so critic can point out their deficiency as a mirror. On the other hand, as a critic, one is also familiar with many art knowledge and technology, which can inspire they and give them confidence in creating better works.

What’s more, expect the reason above, critic can help distinguishing and taking out some masterpiece out of masses of works. It is only because of these critics’ evaluation of works of art as a filter, that the lover of art can have a bright decision on which art and whose art is worthy of time and attention for them. Without their criticism these lover of art would find them merge in the countless of art works. For example, the book review and the movie review in these big newspapers sand magazines, such as the New York Time and Washington Post, show the imperative importance of criticism to the masses. Without these review the readers just lost the direction of which book is worthy of reading. Nevertheless, if the critic could not have enough discrimination and just evaluate the work of art to carter the taste of spectators, we would lost what is really superior and should be preserved and spread to the public. Beethoven, Van Gogh, Da Vinci and so forth, many of their masterpiece was famous and be spread to the public after they die. It reflects as a critic one should have an acute discrimination so that to not let these sutras and masterpieces bury in the history.

In sum, critic gives an equal value to the art and society as well as the artist and only by the effort of artist and critic can our people and society get more great work and the art could develop boomingly.
