TOPIC: ISSUE46 - "While some leaders in government, sports, industry, and other areas attribute their success to a well-developed sense of competition, a society can better prepare its young people for leadership by instilling in them a sense of cooperation."
提纲：1，尽管作者认为合作精神的培养会更有利于年轻人成为领导者，但我觉得竞争意识依然至关重要

There are two kinds of qualities which are necessary for becoming a leader. One is competition and the other is cooperation. The speaker claims that it is better to instill young people a sense of cooperation in order to prepare them for leadership, however, in my view both cooperation and competition are vital to fulfill our purpose.

Admitedly, problems we encounter nowadays are much more complicated than before, experts of many kinds are needed to solve them, then if a leader donot know how to guide peope to cooperate is impossible. Take the Human Genome Project as an example. This project  involves cooperation of over ten thousand scientists and technicals in several countries. Even with such cooperation, it still takes scientists 8 years to complete the project. What would happen if the leader of the project do not know cooperation? So cooperating with others has become the developing trend of society and a well-developed sense of cooperation has become a key factor to be a leader.

However, current society with rapid changing also requires us to be good at competing because the opportunity of success is limited and if persons lack a sense of competition, they would lose the force to work hard. Thus the possible of success in certain realm, that is to become a leader, is little. There are two examples in point can be given.

Firstly, sports athletes give us the best explanation what a role the competition plays. In the  running races, athletes endure years of training to compete with others in the ground track field. Even just one second may make them lose the honor of champion and cannot become the leader. It is also the competition that make peopel creat new record again and again. Actually, as the slogan of Olympic games says, "To be higher,faster and stronger ", the elite of sports is competition, So any young people who want to become the leader of one kind of sports must give the first place to competition.

Secondly, leaders in industry also need the sense of competition. As we all know, the biggest difference between a vigorous company and a banal one is the spirit of its emploees. How does the spirit come about? Through competition. It is competition that forms a creative environment that benefit the whole group at last. If the leader is not good at stimulatng competition in the group, the result is probably that all employees are content with current situations and have no interest to get more achievement. In the other hand, the limited natural resources and market also require the leader to compete with other companies. The competition of several big petrolem companies about the crude oil is an case in point. So if one company want to survive and develop, the leader should have a well-developed sense of competition.

To sum up, as a company leader should creat an environment of competition in the group as well as encourage employees to cooperate with each other, we should instile in young people both a sense of cooperation and a sense of competition. Only in this way can they adapt the society full of challenges and become a leader in various realms.
