"It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves."

It is a tough issue to decide how the individuals define themselves. Some people persist that to identify individuals in the social groups they belong to can gain the correct definition, while others insist that individuals are distinct from each other and can not simply be defined in the social groups. In my point of view, both the two opinions are rational in some perspectives.

First and foremost, we are socialized animals living in a complex and correlated world. The most distinct character that distinguishes our human beings from other species lies in what we now call "socialization". As an infant, it has no sense or awareness of self-controlled or self-disciplined. It may cry at will in loud voice regardless of the feeling of the neighbor in the late night; it may split everywhere not taking into account of the neatness of environment; it may express every kind of feelings-happiness or sadness, anger or soundness, directly and without any hesitation. However, with the progress of socialization, the infant may be taught to act as a member of a group, conform to the legislation of the macro society and the underlying rules of the group. It is also a similar phenomenon when some one joins into a new group. For a specific example, a famous expert in management named Taylor was once a worker in a factor. After establishing the formal membership, he was surprise to find that other members did not give him recognition as a member of the group, instead, lay much pressure on him and required him to abide by the group's informal rules. It was the group's specific rules which brand on the individuals that help us define the individuals. Furthermore, if it is true for us to distinguish others by the character of the group, then, it is also useful for us to define ourselves, because members of the groups have profound impacts on our attitudes, values, religious belief, and political affiliation.

Secondly, the reason why we tend to define ourselves by out identification of the group is that we are likely to follow the mass and then evade the pressure of distinction. In psychological perspectives, it is because we are naturally afraid to be distinct and naturally like to be plain members in a group in order to avoid attack. In this circumstance, we would choose to behavior and act in the same way as others rather than think independently and find a suitable way according to our own personality or situations. As a result , through our identification with social groups, we can define ourselves.

Last but not least, each individual has its own characteristic which originates from the specific parental education, former education, living conditions, choices and other experiences. We should always keep in mind a famous saying in philosophy- there are never two exact the same leaves in the world. Definitely, every one has his own traits. Even if he or she was deeply and profoundly influenced by the environment, he or she can has freedom to choose his/her own ways or methods, no matter how limited the freedom is. Consequently, everyone has its traits that are different with other members in the group. For instance, in a primary school, students from one class who are taught by the same teachers behave various when they see a poor beggar. Even twins who live in almost the same condition may react to one issue in different manners. If so, individual characters are crucial for us to define ourselves.

All in all, we can define ourselves in social groups. Further more, the distinct characteristic of our own also helps us define ourselves and distinguish us from other members of the group.
