Intrinsically, the collective life of human beings, no matter physically or mentally, can be reasonably summarized as making choices ceaselessly. Although people are always complaining about their lack of freedom to make choices at their will, close scrutiny will reveal that the extreme case, in other words, the absolute absence of choices is a very, very rare circumstance.

Undoubtedly, barely a second you are not making choice ever since you are responsible for your own deeds, say five or six years old. Physically, you decide when to sleep, when to wake up and when to have a meal. And most of the time, you schedule for yourself and determine whether to act according to the schedule. Also, occasionally you can make crucial choice, such as job-hopping and immigration that may change your life since ever.  You seem to be the real master of your life, and yet are you？

The answer to the preceding question is complicated and controversial. Although it is yourself that make the final decision, there seems always to be only one best way, which is determined by factors other than you, for you to take. If you are considering a job-hopping, the different salaries, atmospheres and locations of the two companies you are pondering will offer you a definite answer after your throughout consideration. It aptly illustrate that totally able to self-control as human being is, we are no less societal animals. And that is why so many people, some societal elite included, have constantly complaining about the absence of their choices.

However, it is the ability to make choice that distinct a person from a walking dead. Psychologically, the driving force of one’s action is from the inside rather than determined by the circumstances. Generally speaking, decisions that shaped your whole life, such as choosing your university, your career and marriage, are made by yourself. Even you are greatly influenced by someone else when making the decisions; you still remained the right to say no. No one can possibly force you to accomplish things you do not like to. Although there seems always to be something “best” for you to take, you can surely take its alternative if you like. That is to say, where it appears no other choice for you, you can always struggle to change the reality and find yourself the more satisfying alternative, as long as your have sufficient courage and determination. More often than not, people subconsciously take the absence of choice as an ill-fabricated excuse for their weakness and unwillingness to face and challenge the outside conditions. The absolute absence of choice, what in my view is the analog of the situation where you can do nothing to change it, is extremely rare, if the situation exists.

In conclusion, the absence of choice is predominantly a self-deceiving trap. By making efforts with strong-will, courage and determination, you can almost always win yourself the opportunity to make choice.
